The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO MARK A CHICKEN WITH SOMETHING I ALREADY HAVE LAYING AROUND? Without bands, please...I don't have any.

The 2 BRs are pretty much twins and I can't consistently tell them apart. One of them is seriously cranky and from as long as I can remember will just attack the others for no good reason at all...just because they exist. I'd like to mark her and really watch her for a few weeks but...

Right this minute she's looking like a nice bowl of soup to me. Atilla Soup.

Hate to lose the eggs, but I also hate watching her just stirring things up for no reason at all. And now w/the babies, she's a possible threat. We'll see...

I have heard that some will use nail polish on a claw, but I wouldn't recommend it. I like the Blukote ideas

Had to share my new gander with you all. He's so pretty..

Yes. He's supposed to look that fat

His name is Walter. After my bus driver growing up. He was 'fluffy' just like this gander.

Hi everyone I have been following this thread and thought I would get your thoughts on an egg I found this morning. I have never seen anything like this in my 4 years of raising chickens. I thought I would see if anyone else has. I found this soft shelled egg under the roost this morning and I could tell it had something big and red inside of it. So I opened it up and it looks like the egg must have starting incubating inside my hen. It has been about 4-5 days since she laid an egg. What are some thoughts on this and do I need to be concerned that this could happen again if she goes days without laying an egg.

I'd definitely open it up too. Love to see photos if you do..

And honestly...if she was my hen..I would of culled her right then..after I cut that yolk open
I know my chickens..
I know that is not normal
I would not want my hen having internal pain..I do not want one hen to have laying problems I cull hard for laying issues

As a side note

My line is 30 years old..After culling for laying issues I just do not have them anymore. I am now adding new blood and new breeding. I will have to start all over and cull hard for laying issues, and that is OK.

I now will also be culling for no feathers on the third toe...lol

That is about the weirdest laying issue I've seen. It's a first. I've never had anything like that. If I did giver her another shot, I would only give her one. If she wasn't back to laying properly quickly, I would cull. That is not normal I agree.

I agree. Not something I'd want in my flock either.

Meant to say how handsome Walter is! Wish I could have my own Walter.. lol
