The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

a fire. i'm so afraid of fire. really sorry for your loss. that must have been so awful. i don't have a good heat lamp set up figured out. i'm afraid it will break in the night & drop hot glass that will ignite the litter on the floor. because i can't seem to figure out a smart way - my girls & charlie have had some chilly nights. we live in Texas though & chilly to us is nothing compared to y'all further up north.

I cant imagine this cant be dealt with another day when someone had suffered so much. No disrespect
At some point I think we were talking about growing things that the chickens could eat. I grew jerusalem artichokes this past summer. I thought they were be pretty, hide the front of the house that gets a ton of afternoon sun and hopefully my family would enjoy the tubers. The plants grew like crazy , flowered finally about September and I got about 5 - 5 gallon buckets from the one order I received from gurneys. We though, do not like the tubers, so the chickens will be getting them. I put a giant piece in the run and they haven't touched it, so I shredded some in the food processor with hopes to dry. Didn't work, took too much time, I was impatient. So I am going to ff it with some feed and start switching them over. Below a few pictures of my project. This was maybe 1/3 of the five gallon bucket, in my opinion, it made alot! Sorry for the quality, I didn't double check the photos when my daughter was taking them. I also was wondering if a hawk sitting outside/on top the covered run would scare chickens enough not to lay eggs. I don't know if it happens all the time or if today was just a one time occurrence, but we happen to see the hawk sitting right on the covered run today. Couldn't see the chickens, probably in the coop usually are by that time, but then he flew off a minute or so later. I am getting impatient about not getting any eggs and I am looking for a reason.

.Aoxa would never want this thread to stop because of her tragedy and would feel additional burden she does not need. Please do not try to make others feel bad for living there life. Diversions sometimes help. So please people..do not be afraid to post..ask questions..and live..share your joys..your pictures..it will help..not hurt. I am taking pictures of my new chicks tomorrow. I hope Mumsy posts pictures of her new chicks tomorrow too.

We all feel horrible for Aoxa. She has shared so much with us that we feel heartbroken for her. However, she is a farmer, she is an educator (I know *I* have learned so much from her), she is always interested in learning and contributing. No one who has been on here for long has or will forget what she went through yesterday/today. We are all here for her in anyway that we can be. She knows this. And Delisha is right, diversions help. I really don't think Aoxa will feel that she's being slighted or ignorned or forgotten if other people ask questions so that they can learn ways to care for their flocks.

So far I have three Black Orpingtons, three Marans, one Silkie, one Cochin, one Sussex. I have three pips in the incubator but they have done nothing all day. The chicks have been in there since Saturday so I need to get them out. If they are not out tonight I am taking the chicks out in the morning. It is picture day.

Can't wait to see! My new chicks are too fast for the camera! I'm so happy you had these successes after the Silkie sadness!
