The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Someone just mentioned another source of lead that we didn't mention earlier. It is regular garden hoses. If you use garden hoses, they have lead unless they are CLEARLY MARKED LEAD FREE.

I began replacing all my old hoses last summer but totally forgot about that.

My hoses are contractor grade lead free, they were spendy, but have lasted 8 years so.

Where did you purchase your hoses? The only hoses I could find that were lead free were very short. (And very expensive!)

Lowes or Home Depot, but that was like 8 years ago. Don't know if they carry them anymore. Each one is 50'

Were they the white ones with a blue stripe? I think that's where I got mine too and I think the longest they had was either 50 or 25. Can't remember for sure!

No, they are reddish colored and 3/4 ID hoses. I think I spent $75 each. If you can find them today they will be about $125 in today's economy

How many birds do you currently have?

I also use boards with tubs of sand with PDZ under my roosts. My coop is 12x12 and I have 23 birds. I love it! It is easy because I scoop it out every morning with a cat litter scooper and it takes me 10 minutes. I put it in a bucket and dump it on the compost pile. The DL on the floor stays in great condition. My chickens spend all their time outside and only sleep in the coop. The DL never gets stirred up by the chickens. Hope the info helps.
