The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Question for Leahs Mom: Awhile back on the other thread, you made the automatic waterer with the nipple cups instead of just nipples. Then you made your own heater from the dog bowl. Anyway, I was wondering how yours turned out with the freezing temps lately? I made mine following your design...so easy to make and I loved the system. Clean water and I didn't have to empty it everyday. The only problem I had was the water in the cups freezing, then the nipples freezing to the frozen water. I'm thinking it may be because of the location in the coop. I had mine near the wall instead of in the center of the coop. Did you have any issues with yours?

Mine have worked well so far but we haven't had EXTENDED low temperatures so the jury is still out. On the nights that it has been in the 20's, any water that was in the bottom of the cups does freeze. However, usually the level of water is so low that it doesn't stick the nipples down.

Here's what I've done - If I'm around the night before I just turn the little cups upside down to empty any puddling water out then turn them back upright. (The amount of water is so small it won't make the litter too wet!)

My main concern has been that the water in/near the neck of the nipple would freeze inside and lock up the nipples. So far that has NOT happened. I keep a bird bath heater inside the bucket. I try to keep it close to the place where the cup waterer screws into the bucket and I raised up the heater to the level of them by putting in a glass pyrex bowl turned upside-down in the bottom of the bucket. Then I put the heater on top of that and try to keep it pushed toward the openings. (I'll post photos here later when I'm home from work.)

Sue,

I am going to try this auto waterer come late spring. 5-6 months out of the year it just won't work. It will definitely be helpful once it won't freeze though :)

My little FF room is working well. One bucket was too far from the light and had a bit of freezing around the edges. Not a big deal. Got them all close together after that., Temps are low right now. This week's outlook is much better. Every day it's hovering just above freezing. Yesterday morning it was a crisp -13F. The 10 week olds are doing great and snuggling up together for warmth.

Tom still refuses to sleep in the barn, though his girls are all in at night now. He loves his tree. His parents raised him outside and never went in the barn. I don't see any issues with this except predators, and he's quite large. Definitely closing in on 20 lbs. He's a big boy.

I have some pictures to share once I get home from work and unload my camera.

Hope everyone had a decent weekend. Everyone ready for the holidays? I hate traffic this time of year. Really looking forward to the days getting longer!

There is no venue for duck eggs here, so our excess goes to the dogs, they love steamed duck eggs. I am looking forward to my first goose egg, that will be interesting.
