The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have one pair of barn boots..I have several pair of fun boots for winter.
Everyone needing rubber shoes..go to goodwill..my yellow pair cost $2.00.

GOODWILL...

Why didn't I think of that?

I have a designated coop jacket in winter that gets pretty dirty and gets washed often. My coop shoes are Muck garden shoes that I wear to walk in wet grass, the garden, as well as in the coop. They stay just inside my back door.

I have Muck (brand) boots and LOVE them. Wish I had bought them sooner than I did but I was balking at the price. Well worth every $ spent so far.

I debated stopping the FF through the winter and decided they probably needed it more than I needed the break from the inconvenience. I also need every single penny and it simply saves money. So I could not rationalize it away. Less feed, more pro-biotic.Doing the calculations of feed use per bird last year to this year I saved an average of 10 lbs of feed per bird annually. Well actually it was 9.3. I used poetic license and simply exaggerated. More people do not use FF than use it. Every one has a reason not to use it. I simply can't afford not to. I am financially on a strict budget. Any one have a way for me to make $300.00 before year end? ...kidding. I will work better and harder next year and plan better.

BDM,

Remember how we were discussing getting down and dirty to take pictures? Well I was trying to find a picture to relate to that and posted another one I found in the process (white chicken in trees). I finally found the picture I was looking for.

Getting down and dirty taking pictures of my geese. See all my birds around me? hehee...

I find this one interesting because you can see the red hen that was in the picture taken of me taking the pictures. hehe

It's definitely not convenient in the winter, but I agree - worth the savings.

Only 10 pounds a year per bird? I'm saving much, much more.

Each bird should technically eat 1.5 pounds of dry a week. Mine eat under 1 pound. Let's just say it's one pound though to make it easier.. .5 lbs per bird a week x 52 weeks = 26 pounds a year in savings PER bird.

But it is much simpler not to do it. I just see such a huge positive change. I don't think anyone who doesn't do it is dooming their birds. Even if it didn't make any positive changes in the birds, and was just a cost savings - I would do it.

I do have to say though - I may hold off a week before show on the FF. It makes a big mess of feathers.

It i very messy..you might for the week of the show, just feed half of the feeding of FF and add dry to it. It will be less messy for that week and they still get the added protecting for the show.
