The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I believe you can trim spurs.. File them down.

Sounds to me like they are uncomfortable.
Looks to me like they might be too. I might file them down then. They are pretty sharp, like a pair of high heels turned sideways. I just never got to really observe her before, as they had all been so skittish. The game hens have calmed down alot since moving in to the big pen and bigger coop. Before, they were in the chicken tractor for a year. Since about 6 weeks old.

Well the Nustock only lasted a few hours on her comb but her sisters seem to have blobs on them :/. I will reapply tonight after they roost and hope it lasts longer. I'm guessing she will be roosted in back where I can't get to her easily (I can't wait till warmer weather when I can make my hoop coop and walk into coop)
Will find out if it freezes then to since temps will be in teens/20s overnight.

I do have say there is no more dried blood on her comb so I guess that's a good thing :)

Thanks for the box photos.

NOW A QUESTION FOR Y'ALL THAT HAVE HAD BROODIES BEFORE....

I had the nest box made from the cut out rubbermade tote you can see in the photos above. As soon as she was done hatching, she no longer goes in there and has ended up hunkered down in a corner on the floor.

Now...my thought was that since the box has sides and a top if I put it on, it would be warmer in there rather than just out on the floor in the open.

Do your broodies leave the box after they hatch never to return to it?
Once my hens leave, they never go back. I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience I have never seen it in poultry of any kind.

Hi everyone! New here...learning a lot. Keep it up
