The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

aoxia..your rir is beautiful

I want one

how does she lay?
She is Okay. She hasn't laid since July. She went into a molt after being broody for a month and just finished that molt in November. She's between 2- 4 years old. Don't think she'll lay again until spring. When she started laying for us last year, she was good. She stays on her eggs for long periods after laying. I think next year I'll let her actually brood. She only had two eggs, both chicks were dead under her and I got discouraged and broke her. Not sure if she killed them, as there was no blood or peck marks. Hard to say.
aoxa your march 2012 hatch the tricolored babies. what breed are they? they are absolutely beautiful!

These ones? That colouring is mottled. These guys are houdans :)

All grown up. Gigi. I sexed him at 2 weeks by the picture above. He's the front chick.

Here is a pullet from the same brood. Skittles. These birds are large. They are dual purpose, and good layers of large white eggs.

You can get mottling in many breeds.

Gigi won reserve continental at our provincial fall show. I was so excited, because there were a lot in the class!

aoxia,
do all of your birds have names?
Half of mine do not..
I stopped naming them. Even the three Orpingtons do not have names. I am a terrible chicken mom.
No. I'd say 30 have names. Now they go by breed. My originals all have names. If they stand out they have a name. The roosters not being processed have names. For example: All of my barred rock boys are Roger (except Jagger). All of my BR girls are Barbara (except Marge & Twerkie), all of my RSLs are Penny - there are 17 of them.

so on.. I only named two houdans. The boys are all Gigi and girls are all Skittles - though we call the originals "Real Gigi" and "real Skittles" and the rest are fakes. We're weird. It's how we identify.

Plus friends and family name them. I have Toopie & Binu (though I have no idea which two are named that) who my nephew named. It's madness!

I have.... maybe 20 named birds. All of the black Sumatra hens are just greeted with "Hey pretty girl"...unless she has lil ones. Then all broody's are simply mama. Or Mama red...etc. Most of the RIR's are simply Red. etc.
But most hens are simply pretty girl and most roosters are simply Mister.

The Runner drakes are Patrick and the 2 Patrick Jr's

. Penelope the 1st runner female is still Penelope. The rest are just called Duckers

The non-poultry people think we're insane.

I like themes. Only old lady names are given. Sorry if I name a chicken after one of you. If you have an old lady name, it's gonna happen.

I have Phyllis, Murtle, Denny, Mabel, Edna, Gretta, Lorraine, Pearl, Flora-Mae, Agatha, etc.
Old man names: Steve, George, Milton, Roger, Brian, Stanley, Carl, etc.

If you have an awesome old person name, please do share. My silkies do get named. They are productive for a long time, and I'd never eat one.

It is so cold out today, I want to just go back to sleep and pull the covers over my head. The thought of cleaning horse stalls is making me shiver!

Females have chipmunk stripes no spot (my female at top of pic)

Males have spot on head (male below her at bottom of pic). You can also see the barring on his wing feathers.

Whoops...now I get what you're saying. When you said "top" it looked to me like the little male was "on top of the female that was at the top of the photo"....now are you completely confused??

Anyway, yes...top of photo female, bottom of photo male.
