The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Best way to cull a chick?

We are new at this, and I really don't want to do it, but it looks like our little chick isn't going to get any better. Once I find a friend for the one I have left, or find a home for it, we will be culling.

Thanks.
There is a simple quick method for baby chicks besides the other methods listed here. Take a coffee can, use equal parts white vinegar and baking soda, say a cup of each. Place the chick inside with the lid on. Death occurs very quickly in 1-2 minutes by inhaling carbon dioxide as the chick just goes to sleep. Sorry about your little chick.

Camille,

I have a friend really close to my house that sells organic hay. I'm not sure his price, as he give us a discount ($2 a bale), but I can ask for you. The stuff is beautiful.

If you could ask him for me that would be great. We would need 150-300 bales(If their the small square ones). depending if were getting one horse or two XD

The next "thing" I'm doing will be on the variety of combs, so I've been working to "rework" some of the black & white (copyrighted) images that Mumsy and aoxa posted on the thread a few weeks ago. I can't use an original copyrighted image without permission... but I can change them enough so that they are more my own work and then use them - LOL. Here's just one of them... what do you think??

I may be having a little too much fun with the art side of things as I'm sure the post would have been up already if I wasn't playing so much - LOL!

Hello I was wondering how do you clean out a chicken coop like what time, how often, we have a 5-6 sq. ft. Coop To have 6 hens?

You have chicks correct? What are you brooding them in right now, as I see from another post you got them last night.

If they have adequate room, you won't need to change the bedding often at all. Once a week is sufficient if you are giving them enough space, and don't want to consider deep litter - which in short is composting litter with fresh litter on top, and they keep it mixed up and you just keep adding fresh on top of the compost.

5-6 square feet per bird, or total?
