i am so pleased that my birds are doing so well in this crazy weather...i've been so worried. man what a freak snow storm yesterday. the family is still in town-going to try to get home around 2pm. ive looked out the window-anybody want to go ice skating? i love watching it snow, so pretty-but then when i have to be outside dealing with it then not fun no more! i'm going to take my life in my hands just to get out to the coop in a bit-i just hope i can stay in one piece?
my two sense on DL-i don't think i like it. that is what i'm doing right now. it is nothing but a nasty wet mess right now. i have let it build up, with only replacing a few times since they went in the coop in July. i have raked-shoveled a few layers out and replaced with fresh once-twice. i've not completely gone back down to the dirt floor-which i have since the birds have been in there. but i have found that they like pine shavings in the nesting barrels more than anything else. i used to put straw in there but they just kick it out. i haven't found the most perfect thing to put down for a good layer barrier on the floor to keep the wetness out. but i have tried straw, hay, leaves, lawn clippings,pine-cedar shavings, pine needles.
they love it when i put in leaves, lawn clippings, pine needles but once it is soggy-it stays that way. not till it has been so wet with no break has there been a smell. it's not to bad right now but if you are standing at the coop you can smell it. i do have very good ventilation in there and they don't seem to be bothered by the set up, but they still love getting out in the yard tho. i'm going to just keep trying to do what i can to keep it as dry as i can, but this weather is making it impossible. i'm ready for spring!!!
