The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Quote: Less than 1/4 cup a feeding. 5 times a day for the first week.....About 1 1/2 cups a day.... I like to make sure they have fresh food and not walked in all day. They poop in it too no matter how well you plan to keep lil butts out. than increase the amount per feeding and decrease the feed times. Others will do it differently..they don't have 5 times to feed a day..I do..and I like to watch and observe. New hatched chicks do not eat very much. In 3 weeks you will have to make that amount daily.

Don't worry..it will not go to waste..just make sure you keep it covered with water. I would not add anymore dry until 1/2 is gone.

I'm speechless. I feel very sorry for you. That would be my nightmare!

unless of course, they were big meaty ones lol!

4 were meaty, the rest were small little Ameraucana X's. I tried everything to give away the rest of them, they were so beautiful, but I just wasn't expecting to have that many on my hands to give away and I live somewhere isolated. I even offered to drive and pay ferry fare to the city or the island. Unfortunately, no one in December wanted young roos :(

Thank you!!!! Can I add UnACV to the vit/electrolyte water? I'll mix up a gallon and use it for the FF feed when it comes in (the vit-electrolyte is actually coming in w/the chicks) from now on. I've got a 32oz jar for water...a t or T of UnACV? Thank you for all your wisdom!

For drying, I raked mine up and put it in rows to dry. Just one afternoon did it. Sometimes I put it on the cement drive and sometimes I just left it in the grass depending on how wet/dry the grass base was.

But.... I have a 2 acre area that I've just been mowing and not using the clippings. I'd like to find out if there is someone in the area that would mow and bale it in small bales. I've never checked on that before so I don't know if 2 acres is too small and if the price to have someone do it too high. I have no idea of what to expect.

Any of you farm-experienced folks know anything about that? I just keep thinking that it's just going to waste and I'd like to use it.

I used to have a neighbor cut and bale my hay field for a share of the bales. He'd take about 1/2 to 3/4 of the hay and I got the rest - which was more than enough for my horses at the time. A lot of folks are still interested in share cropping. Check around!
