The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

So, is the general consensus that chicks can eat most anything as long as grit is given?

I have some one week old chicks, I have some dried meal worms arriving tomorrow. If I set out grit, can they have some as a treat? Some lettuce in the fridge that's on it's way out? I've checked the chicken treat article here, and those things would be alright. But it doesn't say much about AGE you can start getting treats. They're on FF right now and UnACV in their vitamin water. I have several that are feathering out on their wings already (some are just starting!)
I do not feed young chicks any thing but developer for two weeks, I put them on the ground as soon as I can and they get grasses and what mom would show them what to eat.

And yes..I grow clovers..Kale, cabbages, pumpkins, spinach, thistle, and a few other things for the chickens to free range on. They also get into the garden on occasion even thought it is fenced against them. So i am planting a few other things fir them this year to encourage them to stay out.

I have the most terrible news I can ever imagine typing here...

My barn..

My birds.

My Clementine.

All gone...

The barn caught fire and nothing is left. I don't even know.. I don't know what to say. My heart is broken.
I'm so sorry to hear about this Justine! I can't even come close to imagining how your are feeling. Much love and prayer coming from Texas Kacey

I'm so sorry to hear of the fire and your loss. If there was anyway I could help you, I would
prayers to you

My heart goes out to you Justine..
I am so utterly sorry for all of your loss. I wish I was closer and could somehow wrap you in my arms and share some of your pain. I am so very very sorry. If there is anything i can send you please do not hesitate to ask. We can get thing in the states a bit easier than you can.

I am getting a shipment in May (from Mr. Urch) that would be terrible if I lost all of them. I need to create two brooders in different areas. I have had one barn burn already, don't want another !!!
