The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! See what I got today? The egg on the left is from my New Hampshire, Sunny. It's her 16th egg. In a row. They are all small like this one. The egg on the right is from my New Hampshire, Rose. It's her 7th egg. All of her eggs have been big (like regular large size eggs) but this one takes the cake. Maybe a double-yolker? Now my real question: Will Sunny's eggs get bigger? I also have a laying Cuckoo Marans whose eggs are a bit larger (20% say) than Sunny's. She's laid 13 eggs, with one day off. All three layers are 25 weeks. edited by me because two lefts don't make a right!
Looks like the WR egg I got a few days ago & it was a double yolker :)

I had a pleasant surprise when I got home last night. I have an incubator with a doz or so eggs that I took from abandoned nests from irresponsible broody hens. I was talking to DH and rolling eggs and the very last egg had pipped. By bed time, nothing new and the egg seemed silent. At 3:20am I have a new chick. I rarely name them unless the grand kids do but this little one will be Valentino or Valentina. Hopefully the later. I don't like eating friends. (No pic's. On vacation this summer, a restaurant had nailed a board over a hole on their boardwalk and clutsy me, tripped over the board and fell, smashing my 1 month old camera on the ground. Embarrassingly enough, people came running from everywhere and all I could say was "Is my camera ok? repeatedly. DH was trying to clean the blood off my knees and I was so mad because no one was checking my camera. Priorities, you know. The restaurant offered to pay for my camera but it appeared to work. UNTIL 3 WEEKS AGO! It's a nice camera so It should be repaired by next week. And back to chicken pictures. Most grandmas carry around photo's of their grandchildren and I always apologize but ask I do have chicken pic's. lol

Congratulations, Sue!! Hope she's a Valentina, too.

I was going to mention the baby proof covers for outlets as well. I was just out closing up the coop and checking my plugs when I saw I had used them on the extension cord. I didn't even think to mention them even tho I use me all the time. I use them at Christmas as well for outside lights to prevents water and ice from getting in the outlets I am not using.
I was also thinking that this spring I may run my heavy duty extension cord out to the new coop (about 30-40 ft) in a PVC pip underground so that its not exposed to the elements, animals, etc. Can anyone think of any problems with this idea? I figure run the PVC pipe right up side of coop and into the outlet box cover. I shouldn't get any water in it this way. Similar to how they ran power to my garage. Thoughts? Suggestions?
I can't run a dedicated line to the coop except an extension cord. It would be plugged into a gfi outlet in the garage. And would be for new electric fence & heated dog dishes during the winter.

A regular outlet varies from an extension cord only in that it's permanent instead of temporary. If you're going to all that trouble (to dig a trench) then why not just use UF wire which can be direct buried, then you could add a receptacle at the coop. If you want to easily be able to disconnect power to the coop then put a plug on the end in the garage.
