The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Aoxa--my two cents worth...if it's even worth that: I have a metal roof on my house and LOVE it. Snow slide right off, no shoveling/pulling/raking if it snows deep. Also will last 50 years before replacement needed. And rain on it in the summer...ahhhh so lovely. I, too, love barn-red barns.

As long as you don't have red for the roof cause you'll have irritating small planes circling your property looking for your runway! ;)..Okay so I did that when I was a novice pilot

and the livestock was horses that bolted....

I had a bladder need.

I have silkie eggs in the incubator. I ordered from a lady who already has catdance offspring. These are from those kids. She shows her stock and has won a few awards. The eggs were cheaper and i wanted to try again. My DH still wants catdance eggs. I think this is a good route to go for now. I will see what off spring will look like. I candled last night on day 4 and weighed the eggs. They are loosing weight like they should this time. I am so relieved. All 12 are fertile..how could I be so lucky?
This is great news! I'm going to be paying close attention...With happy results this time around let's hope.

I have two dozen eggs on hold for me to pick up at Catdance farm Saturday. I have tentatively requested Karen to pick out a breeding quality pair for me too. There is no way I could stay focused looking at so many prime candidates and make up my mind so it's awesome she will have some pulled aside for me to peruse when I get there.
My test eggs are on day four in the new Genesis. I will candle and weigh them Friday night before I leave for the weekend. I am loving this new incubator so far.

Yep, that's him. He's been a little nervous today, but I brought in Brutus, my young Pit Bull to keep him company, and he settled down. He is a sweet dog really, but with my time schedule, my other 8 dogs, etc.... I really would like him to be with someone that can devote the time to him. Last thing I want is for him to love me, and for me to let him down because i am spread too thin.

Speaking of dogs.... I now have.... a Siberian Husky (at least mostly) that I took home, bathed.... yep, now he is almost white, been brushing for the last couple days, and working with him. Dog time seems to fly. I will not allow him outside without a lead, but he does very well on the leash and in the car. First couple of times in the car, he would pant quite a bit which I assume was nerves and was very nervous if I left his line of vision. After bathing him I kept him on the lead tied to the bed. He stayed on the floor, and eventually jumped on the bed and laid at my feet. Last night, night two, he was let off the lead and slept with the boys I imagine. He is potty trained and gets nervous when he needs to go out. When it warms up, I will work with him with the chickens. I don't know if I, the operative word being I, can train a full grown adult male dog not to do what instinct tells him to do. I have been through the alphabet zillions of times but can't seem to find something close to what his name was. Being a Siberian Husky, I should have named him White Fang, but chose Buck instead. Jack London's Call of the wild, White Fang. You should hear this dog howl. Anyway, I need to get rid of him. I know it, as we have 8 dogs, 4 inside.... sometimes 6 or 7.... but.... I haven't placed the ad yet....
As I speak, he is laying quietly on the other side of the half door, waiting on me to go by with a few words and a pat on the head.... I feel so NOT like the farmer, pragmatic, person I usually profess to be.... but.... it is what it is....

The last 4 are after a bath and a warm night at home. I noticed the ears are perking up and he is much more relaxed, although he does not pose well for the camera.
Beautiful eyes and my quess is part lab. A labs nose turns light in the winter and dark in the summer or vice versa lol.

Shawn,I read your message and quote with tears in my eyes. We just got back from having Bear put down. It will be hard digging a grave today with this horrible weather, but we will do it. We owe it to him for all the years of laughter and joy he brought us. He will join his half-brother in a grove in our woods. I will give you a call tomorrow. Thanks,
Deb

Aoxa, I have always wanted a red barn! Love it. We are going to be restoring an old barn on our property this spring. I want to keep the outside looking original, but with real wiring, water etc. It will be a long process as it is in really bad condition.

I am sorry for your loss.

Bear might say that he taught you better than that, to wait til tomorrow or the next day when it is in the 40's.... after all it's back to dust....

Call me whenever you feel the need.

Shawn

Shawn, so wonderful to help all these dogs in need out. I am sure you will find the right person for him. Hey, I found a smilely just for you, after you told us that story of chasing him down the road and ripping your designer jeans.

Our dd (destructive dog) came from many miles away. He was advertised a an aussie. When I got there I could tell he had been abused. I WAS NOT LEAVING HIM THERE! It took months and months for my husband to be able to pet him. The more comfortable he became the more destructive he became. I do believe it was Divine Intervention as neither DH nor myself could put him to sleep as we watched everything we owned be destroyed. At the end he loved us so much. He slept, stretched out in bed between us. Couldn't figure him out.

Mumsy - I know you're using your new 1588.

Del - Are you using yours too?

As your hatches go along, could you give us updates on how it's going and a comparison between your experiences with the LG vs the 1588?

I am pretty much doing the same as I did with the other bator. I picked up the eggs at the post office. I set them in egg cartons fat end up for 12 hours and checked air cell attachment. Both sets of eggs are very fresh. They both have little air cells. Both incubators were set up, monitored and running 24 hour before setting. I set the eggs that had good air cells with the turner off. I checked for air cell attachment every 6 hours and put them in the incubator when they attached. I turned the turner on by day 2. I like this new bator so far. It is the first time I have used a fan. I always dry hatched in the other incubator, this new one I have to add water to keep humidity up to 30%. My old one I never added water till day 19 or 20, when I had first pip. I think this incubator will be far superior to Silkie and shipped eggs.

I was going to submit my file but this only takes picture files.

Some new baby pics today

Enjoying a beam of sun

These are nice cage chick feeders..it allows the chicks to get in and keeps all the other poultry out. They also use them to get away from other poultry.
