The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Yep, that's him. He's been a little nervous today, but I brought in Brutus, my young Pit Bull to keep him company, and he settled down. He is a sweet dog really, but with my time schedule, my other 8 dogs, etc.... I really would like him to be with someone that can devote the time to him. Last thing I want is for him to love me, and for me to let him down because i am spread too thin.
I love him sorry I live in so cal. Looks like my miss daisy a yellow lab same face.

oh oh. just saw a craigs list posting for someone taking orders for day old chicks, she is hatching out "rare breeds", including swedish flower hens, and orloffs. I've asked where the eggs are coming from....
she said they are coming from papas poultry. so amazing to me that the swedish flower hens have only been in us for a few years and now they seem to be all over the country! and those creamlegbars....

I think I need to win the lottery. Could build a larger coop/barn. have as many darned chickens as I want! and, be home to actually be able to enjoy them more . and....oh, its time to leave for work. hi ho, hi how, off to work I go....

thanks pigeon guy for the link, you and delish are so kind to find this info - I sure wasn't successful. am learning more about pigeon terminology though.

We work so hard so we can have some of the fun things in life but then have very little time to enjoy. We just need to learn to enjoy double time!

For 3 months I've been going to chop Bruce's head off. I've talked to everyone about it but just couldn't. Yesterday, Bruce went to a new home with 2 ladies of his own. I feel so much better. I posted him on Craig's list along with 2 Silkie roo's. In my area, no one wants Silkies. On another thread they were talking about eating Silkies and how dark the meat was. Ugh! No gray meat for me.

It's crazy how different areas have such different wants...

My silkie roosters always went really easily, but they were pretty good looking. I can't remember what your boys looked like, but if they are not breeder quality or attractive, they don't go well.

The easiest way to get rid of roosters is to not sell any hens without one.. No you can't buy a single hen. You have to buy a pair ;)

just a trick I picked up really quickly lol.

Ahhh...How smart. Why didn't I think of that. I always wondered why you all were talking about pairs and trios. Thanks.

Has anyone purchased directly from Greenfire Farms? What I'm looking for is a review of health and husbandry practices if I ever decided to purchase older birds and introduce them into the flock. Probably will never happen, but I'd like to know just in case I lose my sanity and decide to spend that much.
