The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thank you so much that is really helpful! It sounds like we have the same plans for our hens as your in-laws :)

Never mind bringing chickens with you for a visit! Just Googled it. I won't try it...sorry, Justine!

Mumsy what feed are you changing to? A month ago I switched to Scratch and Peck non GMO non soy feed and my pullets love it. It is like real food and smells divine. I believe it is made in WA state. A local feed store in So Cal stocks it so I don't have to pay the big shipping bill. I am very happy with it.

P.S. Have a great trip and can't wait to see your pix.

You do know this bird here is a Sizzle right? :) She's a few generations in too. Looks really good! I'd love to have some of her babies with your silkies. Darn border!! :p

No, I bought a bunch of EE chicks. Soon her feathers started doing funky things. I called the lady I bought her from and she told me a Frizzle. Doesn't matter. Very even tempered.
Sally..how many frizzels do you have? pretty girl
She's the only one. I'm starting into week 2 of incubating Silkie eggs I bought through the mail. Only 3 veined out. Hopefully 1 will live. I still have those Silkie roo's that I can't seem to integrate into the flock. One will go in fine because he'll run from Wrinkles, the man, but the beauty black one runs out of the cage right for Wrinkles and a horrible fight ensues. I took pic's with DH phone. I'll try to load them on my lap top. Cock fighting is soooo illegal but Wrinkles was so beautiful with his hackle feathers standing straight out.

Well she is frizzled, but is also very similar to a silkie (except the feathers of course). I had one boy and was working on them. I have one FRIZZLED silkie in the brooder, but it's feathers are curly - but still silkied...

I did sell a few trios so I can get a chance to get some of their offspring back.. thankfully...

She's really cute! I like her :)

I'd be glad to share eggs when I finally get her and a Silkie separate from the Marans roo. She was part of the EE roo's harem and he was smaller. Wrinkles is very large and I don't want him to hurt her. She's a cutie.

A STRANGE THING IS HAPPENING. I JUST WENT TO TURN MY EGGS INCUBATING AND ONE OF THE EE EGGS HAS CHANGED SHAPE. IT HAS TO BE NEAR HATCHING TIME. THE ONLY REASON I DON'T REALLY KNOW IS THAT I ROBBED EGGS A COUPLE TIMES FROM BROODY HENS AND HAVE ONLY A SLIGHT IDEA OF HOW LONG THEY'VE BEEN INCUBATING.
THE LENGTH IS THE SAME BUT IT APPEARS TO BE FLATISH ON TOP AND BOTTOM. I'VE NEVER SEEN THAT HAPPEN. HAVE ANY OF YOU? sue
