The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

No odor either. It's a funny green color shell so even with DH fireman's flashlight I can only see the air sac, slightly.

Another question. The Silkie eggs I bought and were shipped. The last time I candled them showed that only 3 were growing/veining. They were set early on 2/12 so is it safe to assume that the rest aren't going to do anything and I can throw them out? They show only the yolk. A couple show squishiness (is that a word?). I didn't think they would do anything anyway.
I bought white leghorn shipped eggs and the first time I candled them, at least half were veining and they came further away and traveled my whole mail route because they were early and I didn't get to the PO to ask them to hold for me. Will I be able to tell if the dud Silkies are fertile this late? I remember reading you all talking about how fragile Silkie eggs are. I had already ordered the eggs and I was only trying to find a friend for Cecilia.

Silkie eggs are easy to see veining early. If you are confident with your flash light..assume they are duds.
Try a test

get a glass of 100 degree water..take out one egg you know is a dud and slowly lower into the water..tell me what it does.

lol. I'm one of the less edumacated. I've been around and owned chickens all my life, off and on, but know nothing about genetics. I know that I cannot breed her to another Sizzle/Frizzle but Silkies are ok. I ended up with her by mistake, my gain. I'd like a couple Silkies or any of the mutants, thereof. It makes me think of the designer dogs. When I was a kid they were ooops, a mutt. Now they are worth big bucks (and some are very cute). So in answer, I'm waiting right along with you on that answer.
I did start looking on line on how to darken my Marans eggs. The hatching eggs I bought were very dark. My laying hens from those eggs rate probably a 4 or 5. Need to get a chart. When joining BYC I started out on the Marans thread but quickly learned that it's big time and I am not. So, I'll just research on my own.

Frizzled Silkie.

Sally posted a picture of a sizzle...

But here is one from google as well.
OK< so what makes the top chicken Frizzled. What was a Silkie bred with to make this(or the other way around) The 2nd pi shows feathers thatlook laced and I don't think Cecilia's is.

The first one is one of my boys that perished in the fire, but I have one of his chicks (or his 1/2 brother's chick) in the basement.

It's a frizzled silkie because it has both the frizzled (curly) and the silkie (fuzzy) feather genes going on. Her chicks (my own) will either look like her or be silkied. The frizzled to silkie is very complicated to explain (for me).

If you breed your girl to a silkie rooster - 25% will be smooth, 25% will be like mama, 25% will be like the boy I posted and 25% will be a regular silkie type feathering. Okay that wasn't as complicated to explain as I thought.. :p

There is a sizzle thread on here. :)

As for the second picture being laced.. Well that's just the colour. It has nothing to do with breed.

Here is one that looks more like your Cecilia.
