The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I think there was a full moon. Noticed some weirdness going on in few other forums too around that time.

My favorite threads are the ones that welcome everyone and everyone is tolerant. My least favorite are those that just a handful of people monopolize the conversation and very little REAL knowlege is shared. I try only to post when I have something to offer. I try not to just post nonsense.

This thread is the best. People are genuinely friendly and helpful. I learn something new every single day I check in here. Even if it is about something I don't raise or have much interest in. Maybe a few months or years from now that shared tid bit of knowledge will come in real handy.

It is counter productive to changing someones mind about poultry husbandry by bullying. There are bullys out there. I don't play with them.

You are a good person Trav. Thank you for speaking up.
Unless you guys and galls ain't talking (typing) it is the only thread I visit. I don't even face book never ever had an account because of to much drama.
I don't see what harm peat would do mixed in your litter. Had to say something about chickens before this got mushy.

I would like to comment on lots of stuff, but don't want to take up pages so I just comment here and there - mostly I ask questions because I am not as experienced as many of you. But I DO look forward to reading every day and love hearing/seeing all the news - like first eggs - which I am STILL waiting for! Love the adorable little hatchlings, coops, etc.!!!

Bulldogma - thanks for heads up on the link posting. If you go with the Pegasus theme some others suggested, maybe Pegasus Perch?

Thanks Delisha & Aoxa for all your advice on the vicious, funny little cockerel! I have one more question on that - from what area of feathers would I pull and do I just tug on one or actually pull a feather out???

Sorry you got bullied/attacked Mumsy, but welcome to the internet

Last time I checked peat moss was organic matter, right??? I thought organic matter mixed with poop will eventually = compost? As long as it's doing what it's supposed to be doing/what you need it to be doing, and your birds like it and it makes good compost as an end product... WHO CARES!

Some people just aren't happy unless they are criticizing or controlling others

Mumsy - could you comment on using the hay correctly?

BDM... Babies!!!!!

Right there from your own eggs.... My babies are only 9 wks tomorrow and I'm already thinking about how babies would turn out with different ones breeding (I'm kind- of hoping little black is a "he" and little blue is a "she" to see what they can produce!)

I tried using hay in the beginning. It seems so stiff. Have you ever seen a dog work his coop with new hay? They circle round and round to pack it down. I haven't seen a chicken do that. lol

Last night I stole 6 turkey eggs from under Rosie. She had such a pile (clutch) Moving babies in all of them. She still has at least 6. I want her to hatch a couple but am so afraid that she and Chuck will stomp them. I'm running out of room to separate poultry!

I'm the same way. I still go to the What Breed or Gender is This? Because it doesn't involve a lot of dedication to the certain thread, and because I find it a good way to learn certain things. I also follow a few people that are educators so I can read up on their replies - Ridgerunner, Fred's Hens, Chris09, Kev, nicalandia, centrarchid and Illa.

It was about it's non-renewable status, but I still don't see the point in attacking her like she was attacked (I went to go find it because I was bored) I have never used it, but now I know it works for Mumsy, I just may ;) Their points did not turn me off on it.

I'm home right now - waiting on my baby barn. Should I move them tonight, or tomorrow? Gah! I can't handle the anticipation! lol

I thought you rehomed your turkeys?

I sure miss mine.. I will get turkeys again I hope. Just have to get a heavy breed that won't fly well.

My mom comes to visit and I get way behind.

Lots of exciting things going on. Wonderful coops, beautiful birds and a new book to look forward to.

I bought my dh some crayfish and now that he's enjoyed them I was going to give them to the chickens. I thought someone had done that with lobster, but when I search I can't find I. Could the original poster point me to the post number or date time frame or let me know how they gave it to their chickens? Thanks.

Also have some good news to share! I got an egg yesterday! I can't imagine what it is like to have babies hatch when we get this excited over our first egg! Can't wait to try it.
Congrats!!! woo hooo first eggs are always so exciting!
OK - I have big news!

Three Swedish Flower Hen eggs under the Silkiebator made it through the 2nd round of candling, but I thought one of those three looked like a quitter based on too small of a dark part (chick) indicating lack of growth/development. But... she wanted the egg back, so I went ahead and left it, figuring after the other two (hopefully) hatched, I'd toss it.

But...

The chick from the "egg in question" is smaller than the others and not as strong. I noticed when it hatched that although the yolk had been completely absorbed, there was still too much of a blood supply adhered to the inside of the shell. There was a lot of blood when this little one hatched and I didn't think it was going to make it. Yet... so far it seems to be improving in health as opposed to declining. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed... I'd sure love to have all three of them make it!!!

You can certainly tell which egg the "runt" came out of. Has anyone else had a bloody egg like this? You can see blood veins all over the inside of the shell.

And tomorrow I should be putting the finishing touches on the new horse trailer coop! (Yes - there will be pictures when it is done to my satisfaction.)

Anyone have some clever name suggestions for my new coop? My dollhouse coop is the "Pollo Club," a little play on words/language since we keep chickens on a horse farm. Now my new coop is a horse trailer. The name doesn't have to stick with that theme. Could be anything, but perhaps something that highlights the mobility factor or something. All suggestions welcome!
I have had bloody eggs here and there. Don't worry I do not see any left over big chunks. Sometimes they nick a blood vessel and mom pulls them out of the egg a bit to soon. I have hd moms cull chicks they knew were not going to make it or were not *right*. ..Your hen knows what she is doing it looks like.

I'm planning on doing the whie wash this spring, just preventive. Knock on wood, I don't have any problems yet. Do u guys start over with new DL in the fall, moving your DL to the garden every spring. Just wondering cuz my DL is deep.deep deep. A mixture of leaves, wood shavings, hay and wood ash. Its finally breaking down really nice. All things I've learned on here:). Luv this thread. ???? Should I start over in the fall again?
Also, I added garlic, oregano and garlic to the FF...my coop smells like pizza. Girls like it and the coop smells wonderful....earthy pizza..lol
