The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I'm planning on doing the whie wash this spring, just preventive. Knock on wood, I don't have any problems yet. Do u guys start over with new DL in the fall, moving your DL to the garden every spring. Just wondering cuz my DL is deep.deep deep. A mixture of leaves, wood shavings, hay and wood ash. Its finally breaking down really nice. All things I've learned on here:). Luv this thread. ???? Should I start over in the fall again?
Also, I added garlic, oregano and garlic to the FF...my coop smells like pizza. Girls like it and the coop smells wonderful....earthy pizza..lol
Most never fully remove DL.

I would remove a good amount if it is too deep. Some remove it all once a year. It's up to you :)

Aoxa - Are the folks who are delivering the baby barn doing the set-up for you? What are you putting it on? (Ties, blocks, cement foundation, etc.)

They say not to remove it all..My humidity is way to wet..I am going to remove it out of the duck and laying side..the broody side I am going to redistribute after i white wash and paint the other two sides. I think for microbes and cocci ammunities it is important to leave part of it.
Is anyone using Vetericyn for wounds, etc.? Can you give us a review if you use it...do you recommend it?

Someone recommended it to me for various uses including after a bumble foot surgery. However, I know nothing about it and wondered if anyone else has any experience or comments on the product?

I used it on a wound one of my hens got from my rooster mating. He tore a 3" gash in her side. By time I found it I could not use superglue to close it(already began healing. So I got the Vertericyn. It helped keep the wound from drying out and scabbing over(trapping any dirt and bacteria in the wound). New skin grew and closed the wound in about 2 weeks. I spayed it on twice a day. I now have all my girls in saddles because my rooster is so massive compared to them(he is 12lbs, heaviest hen is about 6lbs)

They did it all on blocks and levelled it out. I'm very happy with their customer service :) They built it quick, did a very good job and delivered it all set up. Plus they built a pop door for free, and it is a really nice pop door! Pictures coming..

I thought you rehomed your turkeys?

I sure miss mine.. I will get turkeys again I hope. Just have to get a heavy breed that won't fly well.
No, I wanted to and still think I do, sometimes. The woman who knew someone moved (sort of my mentor) and she said that she knew several people who would take them but no one ever called. I have had several people called to say they'd take my babies. Chuck is Bronze/Royal Palm and he can't fly.Much too heavy. Rosie is Royal Palm and can go anywhere. DH tells everyone that will listen how much he hates the chickens and turkeys but won't let me get rid of any. He's more dedicated to making sure that the coop doors are shut after the last one goes in. I only wish you lived in the US or visa versa. Have you always lived in remote areas? I love the snow pic's.
