Hello everybody I am new here and will try to post something, this re things that I do or I have read.
-On the whole grain recipe I do the greener pasture recipe work really good I buy all the grains in bulk and the cost is not so bad.
- About the injured hen maybe is too late but you should check cell migration.
- I found this new product call Oxine (from the same person that talks about cell migration) is working wonderful.

I don't think Oxine is new.

I use it often. Love the stuff. But it is EXPENSIVE! Especially to ship. I use it to clean my incubators and use it with the water in the incubators to keep smell out.

1. You know it was not perditonitis..no excessive fluids or odor
2. No contagious disease or worms. Your intestines are not red and inflamed. Your liver and gizzard look healthy other than excessive fat
3. If you look at the intestines you can see excessive fats, but no part of the intestines are excessive or large, the organs are not excessive or large so no toxic levels are apparent and does not look like it was effected by the excessive fat. I do not see the heart. The heart would tell part of the story, I do not see the reproductive organs, I do not see the lungs.
4. I am going to assume the accumulation of fats blocked an organ. Maybe the heart or the sex organ. I am going to say it was more the hear than the sex organ. because
no sign of infection or fluid in cavity.
I conclude your bird died of organ failure due to excessive fat. BO's are lovely birds and will eat themselves to death if allowed to.

"no question is dumb. Cocci is every where. Mothers get her chicks out of the nest and on the ground at day three to help her chicks start immunities. As long as they are not confined the chances of getting over load of cocci is slim. Chicks and adult birds contract cocci when confined to areas that do not have a chance to air out or the sun to hit it to keep it down to lower levels..or..even the super clean get it because they are not given a chance to build immunities. Than when they are exposed to it ..wham. it hits like a ton of bricks.

I was just wondering.....if you sprayed the area with LAB, would that prevent cocci as it is suppose to kill pathogens and rebuild the soil? I'd like to try this in my run and pasture area.

Nothing prevents cocci..the LABs sure will improve the area and make a healthy environment to keep cocci to a better level.

Lol I know. I have posted in large threads like this before and been ignored. I just wanted someones attention first.

I HATE the idea of using chemicals on my birds, but would like to worm them. I have looked and looked, but everything on natural worming is so controversial. I have heard of the cayenne pepper and black walnut shells. So, to the point, has anyone heard of/used a natural substance that will effectively worm my birds?

I take a sample of chicken poop in with my dog poop twice a year. I butcher and eat my birds. The last thing I want is an over load. I have never had one. I would never worm my birds unless they had worms. I do not *worm* per sea. I offer a ballenced environment with a large area for foraging. I offer pumpkin, squash, cucumbers, Oregano, kale, clovers, and all kinds of goodies to give them choice. I would never kill my birds if i did have an over load. I would change the environment and worm my birds.

Can baby ducks & chickens be kept together until the ducks are old enough to be let out to be around the pond? Thx for any info

I do yet they say it can cause all kinds of problems.

Lala: I am so proud of you for doing the necropsy. My first guess is reproductive issue based on her symptoms. If you had of got to the ovaries, I think you would have had a better idea.. Other than the massive amount of fat, I am just going on gut feeling that it had to do with laying.

So cute!! Also, love them silkies. So sweet. Can you handle them easily? My little one hatched the same day is very skittish!
I would ask yourself the questions Kass asked.

Have you determined 1) that your chickens have internal parasites, 2) that the parasite load they carry is harmful, 3) which parasites they have?

Unless they have parasites, I would not even consider worming them. Pumpkin seeds are a good preventative measure, as is lots of ground to roam on.

Verm-X is an all natural worming remedy, though I haven't tried it myself. Someone here was trying it. I can't remember who though!

Also, your chick there is a barred rock not a BO. This is one type of bedding I haven't tried. Did you shred the paper yourself?

I'm all caught up! It's been a really busy month!

My Houdan, Polish and drizzle Cochin chicks are 7 weeks now. I've had them in a little rabbit tractor out in the main pen for 2 weeks. Today I put then out with my girls. Everyone left them alone except for my Easter Eggers, who I used to think we're so sweet! They were just doing a little bit of chasing and pecking. Should I just keep doing supervised time?

I know is not new but is new for me, i just discover it, I figure there will be some people like me that just may want to use it for the first time.
I have a really bad luck with my chickens here and decided to give it a try I even purchased the fogger to try it.
Maybe I can not do much for my flock now, but from now on I will use it all the time.
