The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I was going to say the same thing about if you just want them off at night, just switch it on for a minute to scare them off.

If you want them off all the time spray them w/ a water hose whenever you see them on it, they hate the water hose and will soon get the idea. My boys especially KNOW the water nozzle well and won't get w/i 10 feet of me when I have it, but that is the way I like it. When I first got chickens I was all about being friends w/ the roos as well as the hens, now I don't want my roos love I want their fear!

I will try this as I too want the roos to fear me.

I will ask my DH about the turning of a fence into guard rails as well.

just a thought, but you know they sell those sort of prickly matts that you can put in your potted plants etc to keep your cats from digging? I wonder if you put a couple of those on top if it might just solve the whole problem.

My run addition is finished :D

We started out letting the girls free range during the day but had to keep them in the fence all the time because of stray dogs. The tall part and the actual coop was all we had to begin with. I wanted them to have plenty of room plus I wanted to get more so here she is! It goes around behind the back too :)

There is also a sliding door where I can close off the new part from the old part in case I need to keep one separate of maybe for the new babies coming in July

Nothing fancy but I'm so happy with it!

A large "stray" dog (it belongs to a neighbor, but he doesn't take care of it) came into my yard today. Of course the chickens were out, roaming free, doing their chicken-y things. My dog ran the stray off, and alerted the chickens to run for cover (which they did).
Good dog.

Please check out This Link. It should clear up where this misconception came from and answer a few other questions you may not have known you had. LOL!

I love this. Can you give me the source of this photo?

I can't. LOL! One thing you could do is take a piece of welded wire fencing and cut pieces every few inches and bend the sharp edges upward. Bend the fence section to fit over the top of your unit and bungee it on. It shouldn't take the chooks long to figure out that it is uncomfortable to sit up there with all those wire ends sticking up. Just make sure none end up with cuts on their feet.

Great setup! Thanks for sharing!!

Right - like the aluminum spike gutter guards that keep birds from nesting in the gutter.......

Motion activated sprinklers work wonders for keeping birds off of or away from things/areas they shouldn't be on or near... and it's pretty entertaining to watch until they learn to stay away
