The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

What age do you butcher the turkeys? Can you get three and just do it anytime you want one? Or do you have to stick to a time line?

Where's Mumsy? Was going to ask how her turkeys are doing, she hasn't been on for a while.

Well, this morning I went out and let the chickens out and Mrs. Bennet comes strolling out of the broccoli. Relieved that wherever she holed up last night she made it through the night without getting eaten. Hopefully we won't repeat this little escapade. Now, onwards and upwards! I have to get everyone fed, changed, and in the car, we're off to pick up broilers and poults this morning. I'm really nervous about the poults, everyone says they're so fradgile, and it's not like I have a big barn where I can raise them on wire for 8 weeks. We don't seem to have blackhead in our area, and DH really wants to raise our own thanksgiving turkey this year, so....

Mrs. Bennet! I am glad she made it home safely! If she is like my Dottie, she'll do it again. :(

All flock and chick feed are basically the same, it's just that some chick feed comes medicated.  All of my chicks, hens, and roosters are on Flock Raiser 20% protein.  My fermented feed is made with 24% gamebird plus some scratch whole grains.

I emailed the Country Side Organics people and asked them that question as well as how long it lasts. They said a fresh bag is good for three months. And that the chick food and the layer/broiler is the same. They just grind the chick feed more. And it is ok for roosters to eat. Just give hens free choice oyster shell.

Question then... if fermenting really does increase protein percentage by 3%, does that mean your final protein is 27%...? Seems like a lot more protein than required but I'm curious how they handle it?
I have actually decreased the protein (grain not animal) in my pre-FF mix now that I am fermenting.
Just curious how others handle this...?

This year I'm trying to gather all my grass clippings, lay it out to dry, then save it. I use it for the nest boxes and they LOVE the grass best. I saved some last year over the winter but only a 5 gallon bucket so I didn't have enough for winter. So..I'm thinkin' ... It's grass hay and I might as well not lose it if I can dry it and keep it.

I would have put some down inside the hen house floor from time to time if I'd had more for them to eat and kick around in.

And - I like that it isn't legume hay with all the stems/straws...just nice soft grass!

I've been doing that for the rabbits. They love it all winter long and I love it because its free feed.. ha

So sorry about Gunnar. I lost my favorite hen when she was 11 months old, she just dropped dead, it was my first loss and quite saddening. Hopefully the lab is able to give you a definitive answer to what caused the death.

On a side note, does anyone have a preference for meat birds? I'm debating between freedom rangers and cornish x but am open to other suggestions. I'm weary of the cornish x because of the health problems associated with the growth rate and have read that the freedom rangers are a good, tastier alternative that are decent free rangers (I guess that's where they get the name?). I plan to free range them until freezer time so I'd like something that blends in with the surrounding (blue, brown, partridge, black would work) to minimize predation.

wouldn't you have to own a bagger to do that? I had a bagger, and it was in the barn, and we really don't want another, because it takes forever to mow the lawn with a bagger.

I also lost my noise cancelling ear phones, or whatever you call them that you wear while mowing. I am so tense while mowing now. I have super sensitive hearing and it really bothers me.

Anyone ever tell you how hard it is to remember everything you had when a fire happens? Sally8 knows I'm sure. I still remember random things I forgot to add to the list.
