The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Red ridge- your chicks are beautiful
All babe- dried grass clippings, leaves. Pine needles.......whatever I find for free, is what I use for nesting boxes. I also put wood ash in them

Del & stony- I agree with your statements. I valu that you share your knowledge with us newvbies. Even when you don't agree with something I do I know its your opinion. And yes we all have to do what is best for out birds

With the help of my very tall best friend I put a roof vent (salvaged from when they replaced my house roof yesterday, on the hoop coop

Here is looking at it from the outside. We just attached it with zip ties

And here is looking up at it from inside the coop. When I cut e tape out from the inside I could instantly feel the cool air and it felt like the temp in the coop dropped
I'm just hoping the rain doesn't get in.......since its raining now I guess I will find out :D

finally finished the chick cupboard in my demolishing and redoing the storage end of the trailer coop. white washing is soo messy but I like the result. Used stony's recipe on the thing.

this shows one of the windows I uncovered -there is another one on the wall opposite the brooder cupboard.

I ended up using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire because of weasels - the trailer door is a bit cattywampus and doesn't have a solid close.

when they outgrow the cupboard, they will go to the floor. There is a chicken wire wall between this area and the existing coop, so the two groups will be able to see each other to help with integration.

am waiting for the phone call to go pick up the chicks. maybe tomorrow?

Wow great job!! :)

Lala,

I am also doing the whitewash, made up the recipe today. After I made it up, it's not really white. Now I think I bought the wrong type of lime. I bought
garden lime, pulverized. It's a grey or light brown color. Which lime did you use?

I sure hope it's okay. I have 4 coops to do, and the first one is for some chicks that are arriving on the 29th...

i used hydrated lime - but I've read that it doesn't matter which kind you use - it will dry white. one kind makes a hotter reaction - so not sure if you can use a plastic bucket, but it will work out regardless. at first you think it is not going to ever turn white, but it will dry white.

wear gloves!!!!! I didn't and boy am I sorry. My hands are so painfully dry regardless of what I am putting on them.

goes on like water, so I would hold back some of the water. can always add later.

Thanks for the help. I will use gloves, and have some real ugly goggles to wear too.

I hope this lime will work in a plastic bucket..... it's what I mixed it up in, and it's sitting in my bathtub

Hope you have a great night!

Be careful with that some lime can burn the feet when wet I use barn lime it is white right out of the bag. Hydrated lime is best.
