The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I do not use layer..ever..I give free choice oyster shells and give back all egg shells I do not use in my garden. Oyster shells weight a lot and you are paying a hefty penny for it in a layer bag. 20% is too much for adults. IMO It sucks you do not have meat protein.:( hard to find in some areas..might want to try growing your own meat for them.
20% is too much? I'll have to look into other options when I finish this bag. Well since the oldest are only 14 weeks maybe it is good for now? I have thought about growing meal worms in the future, I don't think I could handle having the roaches that people have mentioned or the BSF. Of course, until I started reading the OT forum and this one I never thought I would cull a chicken, but I understand now the importance of being able to in the future. Especially to ease suffering and even as an organic meat source. Thanks for the advice.
I just picked up grower (all flock) for my new pullets. I couldn't find anything less than 22% at the feed store. It will be just for the new pullets that I think are about 8-10 weeks old (they are feathered out & outside). My older girls will only get if they run out of their layer. I plan on looking around for something with less protein levels tho.
Thanks Mumsy for the information......I'm going to see if I can find it around here and pot it in a pot so I can keep it away from all the critters :)
You are welcome. :D Silver King is readily available. It is commonly sold in nurseries as an ornamental. The variety I like in my garden is a lovely silvery leafed plant called Great Basin Sage Brush – Artemisia tridentate. I used to hang big bunches of it to dry. There are many others worth cultivating. The more greasy and pungent varieties are the ones you want for bug repellent. If you find plants in your local nursery, just rub a leaf between your finger tips and take a sniff. If it's smelly, you probably want it.
Thank you!! I am one of hose people who steps outside and instantly have Mosquitos biting me while others standing next to me are not bothered at all :/
The pic's are not the best. I haven't had time to try to be creative. Even in NY, we're having storms every day. Nothing like OK and I'm not trying to take anything away from them. My prayers are with them every single day. So, I have 4 BCM. 3 I think are pullets and 1, an upcoming troublemaker. Also, I have 2 Barred Rock. I think I have 1 of each. I'm surprised at the difference of color. I believe the pullet is darker. Any ideas? I'm now nearly 1000 posts behind. I hope all is well.
Fingers crossed for all pullets :) BDM those cloud pics are amazing !!!! But I agree scary as well. The temps here are back in the 40s with rain and thunderstorms. I get my new pullets Sunday & was hoping the temps would be warmer. My older girls could care less they are happily scrounging for bugs :) Off to unload the shavings & feed for the new pullets. I need to start FF for their arrival. I also got smart and got a 50# bag of oyster shell. No more layer feed when the big girls finish what's left.

Note: pressing garlic for 2 5 gallon buckets is hard work!

The food smells so good though. They love that garlic!

Still using chick feed. I hate having different types of feed. The chick feed is 18% protein. Since this isn't their main food source, I figure it isn't a big deal.

It is the chicks' main food source though - in addition to sod and leftovers. I have been giving them meats and eggs.

I was never a huge fan of eggs.. I don't know why but I'm having a current addiction to them. I have 3 a day now, and it gives me so much energy. I don't eat my own, as the birds just aren't laying yet - but I do get them from a local, organic, pasture raised flock. The yolks still aren't as deep gold as ours are (when Lucy DOES lay...)

On another other note... Lucy laid Thursday last week, Friday, and Saturday. I haven't found another since. What the heck? She has to be laying outside in the woods.. I would never find them.. One of the dogs would definitely eat them...

Thinking of locking them in the coop/run tomorrow to see if she is actually laying. Going to rain 10 cm anyway (4 inches)

I am so excited I can hardly stand it. I get to pick up the chicks tonight.

all 4 cream bar pullets are crested and are pullets! only 2 swedish flower hens hatched. there are 3 super blue egg layers (yeah, I know, not exactly a heritage breed, but I have nieces and nephews who go nuts for the blue eggs) and as many icelandics as I want. She also has some week oldfrench copper marans, something called rhodebars, which I am ignorant about, and lavendar laced orps, plus mis top hats, polish, silkies, bantams, cochins.......

I am definitely not, no matter what, coming home with more than 18. So 13 out of the 16 I ordered made it, so, I can pick 3-5 more. She might have a slighly older cream bar roo....not sure....

Good Morning!

When my husband was working in Metairie, Louisiana, (in and offshore drilling), he was attacked by mosquitoes. He was told by the Cajuns to drink Chicory Coffee. He said it worked.

OK - a head's up for everyone -

I've received a reprimand for posting links to the thing: From the message, "While you may have a link to your blog in your signature line, you may not post to redirect members to it in the body of a post."

So going forward I will stop being a bad, bad girl and instead of posting links, I will casually mention there is something new to read and hint at my signature which has been altered to reflect the above mentioned rules.

Well my girls are adjusting to finding their own food. Until this year I was too worried about predators to let them free range every day all day. I've cut my feed bill in half. I've still not tried ff. They wait at the door every morning and return late every night. They've even slimmed down from their winter chub. I'm so glad I've learned to let them be chickens. I have 4 mostly wooded acres but they still like to hang out close to the road. Ok back to hockey!

Hooray!

I have to share a picture of a really huge splash Orpington Chick

10 days old
Now a picture of different breeds..same age
I hope its a pullet of course..because it is sold if it is.
No knobs on the comb yet and skinny legs...10 days old is to young to tell

Good golly that's a BIG chick!!!

The gardens are in full swing. I'll be spending some time at the local farmers tilth with produce to sell on weekends so time is at a premium.
The little turkey poult is the only death out of sixty six birds over the last few months. The HRIR chicks are trying to eat me out of house and home. The Silkies are all growing. The two Catdance hens lay everyday but neither has decided to go broody yet. Judy the Broody is on a nest now for the second time. I gave her a few Catdance eggs. I don't even know if they are fertile. Haven't checked them yet.

My Sheryl Butler White Silkies have turned out better type than the Catdance White trio. The Catdance color mixed chicks are spectacular. They are better at free ranging than the HRIR. That has turned out to be a smart flock of Silkies. The HRIR flock just laze around the feed dishes all day. They follow me everywhere begging and constantly get under foot. The Silkies are out in the shrubbery foraging all day. Who would have thunk it?

My flock is closed now. I'm looking to sell off twelve more Production juvies soon and then I'm going to take a good long look at the rest and start thinking about who goes and who stays. No mediocre free loaders allowed.

One of my RIR bantam pullets lay her first egg today. I smiled when I found it hidden beneath the hay in the big girl nest box. It looks so tiny next to those two jumbo large eggs. I was going to show her in the fall but by the time the Chehalis show rolls around she might be faded out from laying. Oh well.

Great update, Mumsy!!

Oh, I attended my very first poultry auction at our county fairgrounds. It was very disappointing.

How unfortunate!!

1000

Not a chicken but I wanted to share who came home today :D. Both need a bit of beefing up they lost weight over winter but their finally home!

How exciting!!!

Yay for chicks!!!

Ok, so I need a little advice, First, My broody is still sitting, but also getting up and running around the yard screaming at people for a half an hour to an hour every day. Should I give her eggs, or wait and see if she cuts it out with the running around the yard business? She's been sitting about a week now. I think she does the running around the yard thing when Mrs. Henny Penny kicks her off the nest to lay her egg (completely ignoring the other nest box

)

second, my dratted guineas keep knocking over their water dish. It's up on a block (3 inches) I don't want to glue/screw it to the block because that would make it hard to change (it's the quart jar style with the red bottom) I was thinking maybe a weight? but I can't figure out what to put in it that wouldn't keep it from working.... I think they're either trying to jump up on top of it, or just flying acroos the pen and careening off of it. They just moved into an 8 foot by 2 1/2 foot grow out pen, which gives them more room until they hit six weeks and can go outside, and their favorite thing to do is to fly across it.

also, when can I expect a suspected cockerel to start trying to crow? 13 weeks or so now. I just cannot tell if it's a he or a she. Heck, I'm not even 100% sure what breed it is! Sometimes it looks like a cockerel, sometimes a pullet. The only thing crowing out there right now is Mr. Bennet.

Got this today from Metzer Farms - Might want to make your voice heard to the USPS or we will all be paying a LOT for shipping on any future birds!! Any emails must be sent to USPS today!

The Post Office is proposing that we pay an additional $9.00-11.95 for every box of day-old poultry. This is a 75% increase! They are accepting comments on this proposal through this Friday, May 24th. We are asking you to contact the USPS today and protest this additional charge.

Why do we oppose this postage increase?

1) The average postage we now pay for all our duckling and gosling shipments is about $12.00 per shipment. If they add this additional charge, your postage charges will go up at least 75%! How often has the USPS raised rates 75%?

2) The USPS gives no indication how this new income will improve service in any way. It will not make shipping faster or easier. It is not designed to better track shipments. It is not for better ventilated trucks to carry your birds. It is only a way to increase their income at your expense.

3) This new regulation will only affect day-old poultry shipments and bee shipments. Was either industry notified in advance or was our input requested? Absolutely not. It was only when an AP reporter phoned another hatchery that we learned the USPS was proposing this 75% increase in fees. As mailing is our only option, hatcheries such as ours work closely with the USPS and we have our own Live Shipment Representative in Washington, DC. The only response I received when I asked my local rep about it was "Who sent this to you?" It appears to me the Post Office is trying to hide this proposed regulation until it is too late!

We are asking you to send a quick email to the USPS to protest this exorbitant and heavy handed increase!
You must send all emails to: [email protected]
The subject line must read Live Animals
It must be received by this Friday, May 24th
A sample email is below. All you have to do is copy, paste, make it more personal about you, sign and send it.

By all of us sending an email, we can prevent this ill-conceived postage rate increase!

Thank you very much for your assistance!

I am very much against the additional postal charges you are proposing for the live animal shipments. Do you realize this is an average increase of over 75% in what I now pay to receive my day-old poultry?

Your proposed regulation does not indicate how this money will be spent. Will it speed service? Will it making tracking of my birds easier? Will it provide a better environment for my birds during shipping? What does this 75% increase do for me?

I am also very disappointed you did not contact the day-old poultry and bee shipping industries prior to or after your posting of the regulation. Unfortunately it gives the impression that: 1) you don't care about me and 2) you don't care about any input from the hatcheries directly affected by your new rates.

Are you proposing a 75% increase in rates for any of your other customers? Or is it only us?

I do not feel this 75% increase in my postage rates for receiving day old poultry should be implemented.

Sincerely,
