The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

too tired to write much, worked today then came home and worked on the garden/played with the kids/did stuff for the poultry. Garden beds are all built/filled with dirt. Corn and field peas are all planted. We finally found how Eliza the bantam is getting into the garden, and closed up the gaps. Re-planted all the peas she had dug up and eaten.

Aoxa, I love your pictures, especially the one where the silkie looks like it's considering the water very seriously. like "do you think I can swim too?"

Stony, the ducks are so cute with their chicken mama!

The peach and ginger Kombucha sounds amazing. I'll have to try that. My sister makes Kombucha and is sending me a scoby. Best. Sister. Ever.

I did some research about the big crocks, and I'm sure enough that the chances of it having lead are pretty slim to be comfortable using it.

Question for the day. My big buff orpington hen has gotten what seems to me extremely thin. No one else seems particularly skinny. Just her. They have a couple acres of free range, kitchen scraps, and a little feed at night. It's june, she should be fine on free range.Everyone else seems ok on free range.... I'm adding garlic and cayenne to the food again for a week or two, any other ideas? I don't really want to feed everyone more grain. I want them to get out and rustle up their own food, not gossip by the water cooler (so to speak!) But I really am worried about this hen's condition. She also has sort of persistently "dirty trousers" not a lot, just a streak or two on her floof. I always figured it was just because she's got the poofy BO bottom. I checked her over today her vent looks clean, no foul smell, not lice or anything that I could see (I looked for clusters on the base of the feather shafts). She looks a little rough, but with my only other adult hen broody she's pretty much the only recipient of cassanova's affections. (well, he mates the cuckoo marans whenever he can catch her, which isn't often... lol.). Any advice would be appreciated.

I am down to 6 hens. Have lost 3 in the last 3 weeks to a bobcat and osprey Lost another this morning, climbed into the run(8ft with monofiliment on top) and got out with my last cukoo maran. It seems to come around 8:30 to 9 on sat, sun and mon! Kee[ing them in now in coop till after 10. Will have to do more to run

would it be possible to put netting over the top of the run? We are putting some on our run today as a few of my girls are starting to roost in a tree in our run and I am worried that they will fly over the fence. The netting I got was for covering outdoor fishponds to stop birds from taking fish from the pond.

Lice/Mite Question

I read a post on "Fresh Eggs Daily" from last year. It was talking about natural pest control. There was a "recipe" for treating a lice/mite infestation ON THE CHICKEN. Here is the procedure that was posted:

Now I know most of us would dust w/ wood ash rather than DE. But here is my question:

It seems like this would kind of bath would be very drying to the skin. What do you with more experience think?

I'm curious because if I ever need to treat for lice this sounds like it may be a quick way to treat initially. I especially like the idea that you can see the lice coming off the bird. (I like to see results and not just hope...)

Anyhow - your input on this, please.
My first chicken had lice .... I read and read about how to treat her and found a suggestion very close to the one you are proposing ... But mine was a salt bath and then Dr Bronners Peppermint Soap bath ... I did it and it worked... I ended up combining my baths salt & soap as it seemed like way too much work ... Plus I couldn't figure out why they needed to be separate. It worked and my girl was lice free! No DE bath no Ash bath after... Didn't seem to dry out her skin but I didn't use vinegar ... oh and yes I can't imagine doing this for a bunch of hens ... one or two but not many more then that!

Thank you for the interest :)

PS: I love Henny Penny. She is a perfect Penny! All Red Sex Links should have the name ;)
Thanks. Wish I still had them, but I have hopes Doc will be my chance to rebuild. At least I have some of the DNA from the birds that made Phyllis & Edna. Fingers crossed.

I love partridge. My favourite silkie colour hands down :)
That wasn't at my farm no, but I will be painting my own sign very similar. :D

Thanks Justine, she has a wonderful personality as well. I wish I lived on a large enough property so she could have a man in her life and make some baby Penny's.

Sorry to hear about your losses. Never would have thought a bobcat could climb a fence or one that high.

Aoxa beautiful and cute baby photos as usual.

My photographic abilities are zero, but I have thick skin, so I'll post a few anyway :) First pics of a pair of 2 month old Cochins and an almost 4 month old White Catdance Silkie cockerel with a FF encrusted face.
