One of our RIR rooster's legs have some reddish places on them. Is this normal? This is our first time to have chicks so I didn't know if this is normal or something wrong. He is about 22 weeks old now. Thanks!

A few people may have known about this little girl here before me posting the announcement - but here she is! Our alpaca! She is not yet named. She is 3 weeks old right now, so won't be coming home for quite a while yet, but she is ours. My mother bought her for us for our barn warming.

With her mother - they live at the zoo. They are currently in the petting area, though they are not tame yet.

Oh and all yesterday everyone worked on the fence at our barn warming/fence building party. It's not done, but once the gates are in, Susan and I can handle the rest (I hope).


Some of the chicks we hatched yesterday as well. 15 Silver Pencilled Plymouth Rocks, 2 Easter Eggers and Six Silkies.

Justine, I'm so happy your party was fun! Love the pictures!

BDM, do female SFH have slightly large combs? I have some that are clearly males, but others have a less pronounced comb. If only you lived closer, I'd have given you one of my too many roosters! And you could help e decide who to keep.

aoxa, I didn't notice if there were symptoms before I put them on the hay. It wasn't until they woke up and got active that I sat down and started watching them. I just can't believe his eye would have that much swelling that fast if it were the hay. They were only on it an hour or so and they were outside of the coop. It was just too hot that day to leave them inside.

I kept them away from the other birds but had them out in the open, warm air today. They had grass under their feet and were in light shade. I figure fresh air and sunlight can't be bad for them. They look about the same this evening... but at least they're no worse!

My sister offered me some medicated feed... any chance it would be helpful?

Sorry Bulldogma... being an Oregon transplant in Sweden (not to be confused with an "organ transplant"...

) ... and just a few months new in the chicken raising hobby, I really don't know much beyond the vague history that's posted almost everywhere on the internet from the Google searches and them being called 'Skånsk Blommehöns' (Skåne Flower Hens) here.

I have a neighbor that has had some for years, but to him they just seem to be chickens from whence eggs and meat come from. Myself, I have Buff Orpingtons!

At the risk of your neighbor wondering about his rather weird new American neighbor, I'd love to see some pictures of his flock if you get a chance to take some! I'm absolutely in love with the breed - I have 17 Skånsk Blommehöns from 5 different bloodlines as of today. LOL! (My goal is to have one... a few... a LOT of every color.)
