The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

So I have decided chicken tots are like toddlers. Just went out to see if the babies roosted. Edie was roosted on big girl roost with Sophie next to her. Sophie was only one who found her way in on her own. Stella was wandering in the yard (thank goodness I didn't bring dogs out with me) honking like a goose. After a brief chase I cornered her in the front garden and put her in the coop on roost I put them on last night. Of course Edie got down and got up with Stella. Sophie got dow and went on the nesting boxes and then flew & landed on the big girls........so i grabbed her and put her over next to Stella. George was in the run and after another brief chase he went in the coop. Next to Sophie, the problem? They weren't roosted in the right order so Sophie and Stella were trying to crawl over each other. I finally got them in the correct order & they settled down.

Reminds me of my son when he was little everything had to be in order for him to go to sleep. Ugh!

And I moved the one hawk tent that I had next to the metal fence. I believe that's how Stella and Edie got out.

It's like a chicken soap opera......I really need to start a chicken journal :D

The flooring frame for the new coop is down! 10x16 size! Only braces for center 27 inches and that flooring is not installed. Can't seem to get my photos to upload. Put some left over roll vinyl on the front corner and moved their little temp coop on it. Put some wood pellets that explode into shavings if they get wet in the roost part. Then put food and water in the front. They went in immediately!!!! Such GOOD girls! Will use it for a broody/chick pen right inside the big coop! It doesn't even cover 1/4 of coop flooring.

Tomorrow plan to finish the platform and cut down the studs to size. Then we will see what I can do more. Either the wall beginning or work on the run around it all to keep varmints from getting near. Will be home all day tomorrow and Saturday. My girls are going to be so happy in this roomy coop with all the fresh air!

Armorfirelady: You gave me a good laugh. Thanks. Yes I think they want things just so when they go to bed. I can just see them clamoring over each other to get in the right order (hey that is my side of the bed).

Going to check on mine later. I did move one of the cheap roosting bars out of the back of the temp coop when I moved it over to the larger platform. I will put it back in when I use it for chicks.

am I the only one who gags a little when ever i see the b word?

You do realize that a lot of people ended up on this thread either because they used to read certain threads and started on here when they ended, or they have discovered the old threads and found this one. I kind of resent trashing someone that isn't around anymore for whatever reason.

Congrats bluebirdnanny !!
Thanks! Not sure I got it exactly squared. But hey I am alone and not a carpenter. Walk with a cane too so will probably have to ask for help when I 'raise' the walls. Can't afford to pay anyone to do it for me and I want it done by the plan. Want to finish it quick before the building permit on house expires.... guess I am kind of cheating by doing this construction before the NEMAH contractor is done with the house. That way if anyone asks if I have a permit I can say yeah I do..lol

Thanks to all the good advice I received here, the newbies are doing well. Treated with garlic/wet feed one day alternating with garlic/yogurt/oregano/ feed the next for 6 days. They go outside into the quarantine pen every afternoon when I get home from work for 3 hours.

Gwen (the ratty little one) is feathering out more and is hyper! Osprey has always looked pretty healthy and has really mellowed out over the last week and 1/2.

Gwen is either younger, a runt, was picked on and/or was sick when I got her but she's really putting on the weight now.

They are supposed to be pullets, cuckoo marans x white ameraucana and are about 6 weeks old. Their pea combs are pale and only have the one row of little bumps down the middle. Do you guys think they are pullets?

Thanks for the help with them!

A good reminder. As Grandma said, "If you don't have anything nice to say..." We have a great group here so let's focus on the future and not any hard feelings some may have from the past.

Laugh? I think that is quite creative!
