The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

(And for today's out of the blue question: Is there any real danger to a pregnant lady taking care of chickens and gathering eggs?)

I imagine this question would be geared toward a worry of transmittable disease such as a pregnant woman handling a cat litter box without gloves? Washing hands after spending time with the flock or in the barn is just common sense I suppose. Women did do a lot of hard labor before and after childbirth back in the day but the mortality was higher for both women and children then too. I raised chickens while pregnant with three of my four children with no ill affects. I washed my hands a lot then and still do.

I finally have a DSLR Camera!! My Nikon D200 came in the mail so I wanted to take the time to share some photos I took. Still getting the hang of it so bare with me untill my photography improves.

What's the difference between an Houdan and a Polish? Sorry Newb question, but curious because they look so similar. :)

There are a lot of differences, this site can maybe help break it down

Camille, how is your female to male ratio with the Easter Eggers?

I have 4 girls and 5 boys that are coloured, and I believe 5 girls and one boy that are white.

If you get a couple white boys, I will trade you for something? I need two white boys.

PPS: Awesome pictures Camille! So glad you can finally share some after all this time. Love Steve's son Steve! :D

I havent really checked. I cant wait to get them moved to the barn and I cant access the chicks as easilly as Al can. and EEs I find are hard to sex. And i dont mind at all once I know whos a boy and whos a girl :).

Camille, your pictures are so pretty! I'm so glad you shared them. It inspired me to get outside and take pictures of my four month old Catdance chicks. They free range and roll around in the soot, compost pile, and any thing else filthy they can find. Still, I love them so.

One of the Partridge females started squatting for me. Kind of young for a four month old Silkie.

This is my favorite Porcelain boy.

This is my favorite Lavender/Self Blue boy.

I moved all the Silkies into the new pen behind the barn so I could put the turkeys in the Hoop Coop run. It's been a smooth transition so far.

The two nearly black pullets are Blue Splits. The little girl in the foreground is my favorite and is developing lavender polka dots on her chest. This is Gi Gi. The white rear in the rear is Clementine. I need to get better pic's of him.

Thanks to those that sent greetings.

I got this in a PM...wanted to re-post in case it will help prevent an injury:

"Beware of metal bars at base of metal dog crates."
I am sorry for your loss in your family. Thank you for dropping in and posting this. I use a crate like this for my chickens at times, so I will be sure to protect them from being able to slip their feet into areas that might hurt them before I use it again.
