The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Quote: Well...these are going under the broody so I can't leave them in the carton!

I got them yesterday and tried to candle. I could see that 1 of them looked stable, 1 was questionable, 3 are totally free-moving inside.

I put them in a carton point down. I was hoping to set them under the broody tomorrow evening. I guess I should just leave them alone until tomorrow and then look at them again to see if they're stable in there.

Does the yolk usually reside at the end where the air cell should be? (the end that's not pointed).
I think for eggs that I have gathered from my chickens, the yolk is at the top part of the area under the air bubble. For shipped eggs, If the string part of the white is broken it could be anywhere but I'm thinking it would sink as it is heavier than the whites.

I know that Aoxa has praised the uses of Coconut Oil for a long time. I have been looking for a small container to purchase (the health food store is expensive). Then this morning I found this article via a friend on FB. Very interesting read:

I think I will put it on my shopping list & try it on greens feet. Even after Bumblefoot surgery and keeping it wrapped for a couple weeks with a iodine/sugar poultice she still has the scabs on her feet. I have been spraying them with blue kote as a sort of protective covering since the gauze was causing the scales on her legs to raise.

I might just try wrapping them again after applying coconut oil. Or I was thinking I could give it her orally? A drop or 2 every day in some food. Thoughts?

You can get large containers of Coconut oil at Costco for a comparatively good price. Then you can scoop some into a smaller jars for first aid/cosmetic/chicken purposes. I like using coconut oil on my own skin. A little bit goes a long way.

Kind of a shot in the dark, Is there a way to keep snakes
Just pulled a 5 ft rat snake out of one of my chicken pens, nobody was in there luckily.
My grandpa used to keep a fake owl in the boat house and barns to keep snakes out. Then again, he also had a fake snake in there to keep rodents away as well...We still had the occasional problem with both.

Just wanted to let you kind folks know what wound up working for my friend's little boy with the incredibly awful dry skin. He went swimming one day in a pool of salt water (rather than chlorinated), and it was like a miracle cure. My friend has since purchased some pool salt, and about once a week he takes a bath with a little added to his bath water, and so far it seems to be working great. I have no idea why, just thought it was interesting and wanted to share.

Shan, if you weren't so far away, I'd send you some chicks.

That would be a bit of a journey wouldn't it? Haha! Thanks for the thought though :)

Other than drying it, any ideas on what to do with a schwackload of oregano? It's everywhere on our property. I was feeding it to the birds previous to culling and it definitely helped them breathe easier (oregano, garlic, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, ginger & yogurt- sometimes mint).

Funny! I find sea water has the opposite effect. I get all dried out!

We rescued a kitten found under our porch, all by it's self but unable to eat on it's own. It had a grub in it's neck and one in the tissue by it's butt. And it was covered with maggots. The vets were horrified and didn't think it would even live. The grubs left huge holes and the maggots were just disgusting but because they only ate rotted tissue, they didn't pose a problem. It literally took weeks to months to get her in good health but "Magpie" is now a healthy fat kitty. Maggots are everywhere. My mother always told us they were from "dirty people". Unfortunately, we have them now and again and Mom, I'm not dirty! lol
