thats great that guy took the rooster. checked out a little chicken/puppy/kitten/goat/rabbit/duckling swap today. Lots and lots of roosters and as far as I could see, no takers. Saw some beautiful ones, though. Since I can't identify the breeds, although they are most likely "rare" or "heritage" breeds, I'm thinking not alot of alternative to the soup pot. Still looking for a way to secure trash can lids that is coon proof!

I don't bring roosters to the sales. I know no one will take them if they aren't of a popular breed. I take silkie roosters, houdans go well, barred rocks.. but any mutts.. nope. You can't even give them away.

I usually just eat them myself. I'd never give them away if that was to become his fate somewhere else.. but since he liked the look of him.. Whatever.

The kids next store actually jumped up and down in excitement. Emily proclaimed her love for us. Hahaha

Randy never attacked them, but they weren't allowed anywhere around our place without us close by (for protection). We didn't feel comfortable.

RIR and two mixed birds that were supposed to be RIR

If they are Production Reds (hatchery RIR) they have Leghorn in them. Gives them the flopped over comb. Perfectly normal for this variety.

Thanks! We were told by the lady we bought them from that they are RIR but since we have two or three different looks out of the 8 we have, I am certain they have been crossed somewhere and may have started as production reds. Thanks again!

That mound of dirt left from creating our road down to the barn has all been covered in greenery. I think it makes for a nice addition to our yard. The goats like it.

looking for a way to secure trash can lids that is coon proof!

Could you drill a hole on the lid and put an eye hook (just the eye part of it) & put the hook part on the bottom part of can? One on each side? I have seen large ones at places like lowes? Or 2 eyes close enough you could put a caribiner thru each eye, one on each side?

I'm trying to break red of being broody. She is nasty to Edie and the tots when she gets off to eat. She is afraid they are going to disturb her golf balls. I removed everything last night & she was out this morning but when I got back home this afternoon she was back in there. She was sitting on Edie's egg and one of her sisters eggs. She was not impressed when I tried to remove them. Growling away with her hackles up. I guess me laughing at her didn't help

She was back sitting on nothing tonight so I tossed her again. She did get up on the roost but I don't know if she stayed up there or not.

Question for you who have had Brody's before. She has a red line down her breast where she pulled her feathers out. It's about 1/4 inch wide and about 6 inches long. It's red but not irritated. Skin around it is fine. Any guesses?

Justine, you are so lucky to live in Canada, I'm hoping the US might someday catch up to canada and many other countries where health care is viewed as a basic right, instead of just something for those who can afford it - like here in the states. even the new affordable health care act, which is a great start, has a long long way to go.

armorfire lady, I thought of trying to make a hole to catch a chain or something thru, but these are outdoor and I already have to cover the lid where the handle is so rain doesn't seep in and spoil the feeds. I'll look on lowes online and see if I can see cans that you referring to. I'm sure someone has figured this out since coons and garbage cans....but I've never had a coon that could do this before.

Maybe some waterproof silicone around them would keep the water out? I would do it both on the outside & inside.

We just use bungee cords on ours........you apparently have much smarter coons than we do
They make plastic locker totes that have latches and holes on them for locks. Maybe something like that would work? Or plastic garage cans with locking lids?
