The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

We can't let ours wander. I am neighbored on four sides and they all have big dogs. I knew they would be confined when I decided to get them. They are beautiful and friendly birds but I don't have them for pets. They are going onto the dinner table this winter. I wanted to keep the tom and one hen for breeding but they are just too dirty. The run is plenty big for them. We turn the litter because they don't scratch it up themselves. They put out a tremendous amount of poo for five birds. These five poults make the same amount of mess as twenty LF chickens. I know this because I can see the results every day.

I agree with you 100%. We haven't named ours either and ours aren't supposed to wander. I know a lot of people disagree with me but it's wing trimming time. I need to get rid of 4. They do eat a ton, don't scratch, pick on the chickens at times but are so enjoyable to watch. We are eating ours also except for3 or 4. Plus, they take up too much room.

Anyone ever get embedded with a tick? Supposedly I have to get a tetanus shot now. :|

I've only pulled maybe 3 from my pets this year. Last year it was unbelievable, but never had one on me!

I was so grossed out.

Tick was a deer tick, or black legged tick.

This is what it looked like.
I have never heard of getting a tetanus shot for a tick bite. I have heard of antibiotics when you get one though. Hopefully you have no lasting effects from it. Lyme disease is scary. I have several friends diagnosed with it

deer ticks carry limes disease to.

We had ticks on us all the time when we were kids (collie kennel). I'm still alive and no shots

Lyme disease is MUCH more common and serious in the 21st century. 20%-50% of ticks carry it.

So rather than risk that very high %, I'll just get the tetanus. I'm bound to step on a rusty nail doing farm work eventually anyway. :p It lasts 10 years.

At least we found it before it was too engorged.

I got the entire thing out, I know what to look for if I see anything unusual, and I will get to the doctor if I have any symptoms. It is scary for sure!

So if you ever get bitten by a tick, identify and keep it. If I had of kept it: Susan smooshed it and we lost it in the car on the way to the movies, I could have got it tested and that was that.

I doubt it was attached for long though. It wasn't engorged like I have seen them get on our animals - which by the way, you should keep those ticks as well and find somewhere to test those because your dogs/cats can get lyme disease too.
