The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Any ideas on a good way to sift wood ash?  We just burned a fire but there is a lot of chunky stuff and rocks in there.

You know when you buy coolers and they sometimes have little shelves with slots in the bottom in them that are removable? Yup never used mine but I found its a great sifter for wood ash lol. Some days I wonder why I save certain things.......and BAM I find a use for it even if its a few years down the road :D

So I changed mrs greens bandages today.......the smallest bumblefoot scab is half its size!!! And the other shrunk some as well. I don't know if I didn't get all the dirt off the scab area with the soak last night or the coconut oil did it? Fingers crossed tomorrow looks better.

Oh and if ur treating a hen in their area where the others are remember they like bright things and will taste anything. Stella & Edie have a fascination with the orange vet wrap. I had to keep chasing them cuz they kept stealing my pieces. And all the girls decided to taste the coconut oil...........at least they keep me entertained :/

I think I used a nursery flat ... one of the sturdy black plastic ones with the square holes? Or something similar. I think what I'd been looking to use was the sifter part out of a sifter cat box, but came across the nursery flat first. I had been planning on making a sifter out of fine-mesh hardware cloth ... didn't get around to that before I'd solved the problem another way.

I've read elsewhere that it is good to offer your flock chunks of burned wood to peck at ... I presume this means nice wood from trees ... but as that's what I'm burning to make the ash for the birds I don't mind too much about having some bigger chunks in it.

Good ideas!

I don't mind the larger chunks of wood ash either but this time the fire had a lot of stuff left in the bottom like some rocks, pieces of broken blocks, etc. Just want to get that stuff out of there.

although I am afraid to bring this bird to a show..I just might have too..He has grown into a beautiful bird.

He is 7 months old and weighs 10.3 lbs
