The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

well, he's still got some membrane stuck over 1 eye, but i'm hesitant to pull it off for fear of tearing his eyelid... so for now it'll stay there and it'll come off when it comes off. right now he seems fine navigating with just 1 eye. looks all around him and then makes a beeline in one direction. LOL still not standing well, but that may just be because he was cramped up for going on 3 extra whole days. still making him drink when I think about it, and he seems to be trying to figure out the crumbles too while avoiding the stampeding 7.
It sounds like you're being a good brood hen to him!

I agree; I wouldn't want to risk tearing his eyelid either (but I'm a newb, I've never hatched before). Could you soak it in a little saline or water?
It's good he's doing alright with just one eye; I like his navigation technique, he sounds smart!
Please keep us updated. And I so enjoy hearing about the babies. I can't wait until I can start hatching!!! (We have puppies right now, so I have to wait until we're done with them. But then I'm getting my butt in gear building an incubator and hatching out some babies

!!! For now, I'm contenting myself with absorbing every little bit of information I can get on here.

I have puppy pans like that but no center thingie.  That would be helpful...is it hollow underneith?  Wondering because I have trouble w/the ss puppy pans being too lightweight and they just tip right over.  But if it's hollow under there you could set it over a rock to keep it in place.

If you combined the two ideas by putting rocks or something weighty inside an inverted canning funnel...

If you haven't used sierra yet, pm me and I can "refer" you, that way you get a $10 coupon (just pm me and yes, I get a $10 coupon too for referring you) If you sign up for the dealflyer coupons, then you also get better deals.

So this pan was about $5 bucks, with a dealflyer coupon, $9 bucks without. Yes, the center is hollow. But it seems to me that a small heavy mixing bowl or something turned upside down would also give enough weight in a flat pan so it wouldn't tip.

It is working great for making a bigger circle for the hens - so wide they can't reach across to peck someone out of the way on the other side of it.

I like that thinking. Maybe I'll stick something in my glass pans and see if that keeps things more peaceful. I'll take a look at that site too!
