The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

All the kiddos got outside with some home-made suet today. These have a mix of rendered suet mixed with lard and coconut oil. Then added BOSS, Cayenne Flakes, Some whole organic corn and barley. Some of them got some garlic too.

The "iron" fence is dividing off the place for the younger ones to go to get away from the olders if they want to. I put the suet cages along it and they can reach it from both sides.

I asked people on the EE braggers thread to test out the egg colours. This one is really cool!

and thanks, I'll do the bluekote and let her loose. RIght now it is hard to see why I am keeping roosters, they are nothing but trouble.

That is interesting. So what is the consensus about the color all the way through vs. surface color on the ees or pure As? Is it a myth?

Myth.

You'll remember why once we hit better weather :)

The breed snobbery is the very reason that I chose EE over Ameraucanas.  That plus it seemed that when I was trying to get hatching eggs for Ameraucanas, every one's Am's were on strike.  So, my logic went like this... why knock myself out trying to get eggs for a bird that have a reputation for going on extended strikes, and generally slow to start laying when I could get the same eggs in my basket from girls who start laying earlier and more reliably.  I'm delighted with my MMc EE.  They started laying at 16.5 weeks, even before my BSL.

I have a 5 year old McMurray EE, Jezebel,  she is a trouper.  Was laying up until molt, and I'm hoping she'll start up again now that daylight hours are increasing.

Justine, funny enough she has always been friendly and curious, unlike her EE hatchmate Izabel who was flighty as heck, also a screamer - I lost her to a hawk last year.

I'm gonna dig some eggshells out of the compost bin....

Hmmmm Edie is an EE. Sally8 was told they would be super blue layers. She does lay a blue egg but I can't remember the inside color & she is on strike for the winter. She is also friendly. She won't let me willingly pick her up but when I get her she is fine being held. She likes to come up to me and talk. :)

Lalala glad to hear Boosters comb and wattles are doing ok. I agree I would just leave them be and see what happens since they don't look infected. I would use blue kote on your hen as well. It's what I used on Lucy's feet where the feathers were pulled out and bleeding. I don't think the others picked at the blood tho.

Leah's mom why am I not surprised your BR is front and center next to the suet. That's exactly where Stella would be also :D

Powers out here. We have a blizzard for a few days & never lose power but a normal winter night out it goes. But I plugged in the important things like the fridge, freezer, tv and internet lol :D
