The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Other than seeing them I have never specifically eaten one or raised them. They look cute..and it looks like you have mostly males..

How do you know which ones are the males? Are they the ones with the bigger white spots??

Absolutely! That was one BIG mink too!

On another topic, a friend and I have just received over a hundred MG (Mistral Gris) chicks - we have a freshly made Ohio Brooder which so far seems to be working OK. Anyone else tried using them?
Please elaborate on your Ohio Brooder. Where are you brooding the chicks, what are your day and night time temps like, what size bulbs are you using, how big is your brooder area? I'm NEVER planning to brood chicks in my house again! Will the Ohio Brooder work outside in below freezing temps??????? Thanks!

You won't believe this but yesterday was my birthday too!!!  I did buy the DE and added an old bleached out and cleaned litter box filled with a mixture of sand DE and ash.  It looks like they are using it but weirdly enough they are pecking at the mixture too. Do they "eat" DE?  The strangest thing is that Shirley, the one that had the worst lice infestation last time just  stands in the older dust bin and will puff herself up.  No one could use it because she would stay there.   That might be why Charlie has lice.  My brahma, Dagney is definitely dust bathing in the new pan.  YAY!!!  Maybe she will show the others except she seems inclined not to get out too.  Do I have to periodically change out the dirt mixture in the bins or can I just add to them?
As to your panels for your run.  That's a great idea.  I put an old water heater door off a mobile home up against the run so they can be shielded from the wind on that side then I used left over clear roofing panel and clear vinyl I sewed together to shield off the entire "people" door and again the lower half of the run.  They come out everyday.  Of course, if the want to eat and drink, they have no choice.  But they stay out there all day and even get up on the roosts which actually puts them in the wind.  I think the combo of the wind block and the deep liter keeps it warm in there for them.  At least its warm when I go in and play with them.  I will see if the DE added to the boxes helps and then do the bucket washing when it warms up some.
Anyway, Happy Birthday girl!!  Hope you had a good day yesterday.

Happy Birthday fenwickchic!!!!! How exciting to share a birthday! Awesome about the DE! Yes--they can eat it! It is actually good for them.... Lisa Steele also has a "breakfast of champions" for layers and it calls for a little bit of it in the breakfast mix! I don't think they should eat a ton of it-- but I also don't think they will. I think they usually know what to eat and how much! Ours peck around in the sandbox all the time and it is very fine granules-- they are either trying to fill up on grit or there is something else they are liking about it! Also-- I am not positive about whether you would need to change it but I would guess not and that you could just add to it! It is a relief to hear you say that yours come out-- and hang out all day! DH did go to Lowes today and purchased Polycarbonate clear roof sheeting and he installed it!!!! He worked on it until after dark-- it is finished but I didn't get to show it to the girls yet!!! I did go in the coop though to tell them goodnight and bragged about it though! I can't wait till tomorrow. I do have their food and water in the coop but it is very very tight (as in no openings that aren't covered with hardware wire) in there so I really don't stress about mice/rats and I actually go through the shavings almost daily. In the summer I always put another waterer outside and weather permitting I have always given them any scartch or treats outside. Now that they have this enclosed part of the run, I will for sure be giving them their extras outside! I know they are going to LOVE it!!!! DH was going to take me to dinner last night but I said--- "ehhhh.....I'd rather save the money for my chicken run!!!" haha.... he couldn't resist to do it for me when it was all I was getting for my birthday..... :O) Hope you had a wonderful day yesterday and today!!!!

lol well, I got lucky... better lucky than good any day my hubby says. but I was just using that as an example of why you always worry what's behind what you're shooting... if it had been one of my horses off to the side and not in direct line of fire, she would be dead now.
