The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Ok here's a question for you all. How is it when you rinse grains in water twice daily the grains will sprout in a few days. Yet fermented grains don't sprout and they stay submerged for weeks?

Just something I thought of this morning as I was rinsing my grains and stirring the FF

Hmm I would think being submerged would not allow the gas exchange required for plant life. They can't grow if they can't breathe and land plants are not designed for life under water.

Grains soaking in water will sprout for me. I believe that the acid in the FF inhibits the sprouting, but as PP stated, the persistent ones will even sprout in the FF.
Yeah, I had left grains totally submerged in water and they grew right out of it. Took weeks.. I was too grossed out to move it. There was mold... I made Susan do it. I can't handle that stuff. LOL

I have come to the conclusion I do not have time for sprouting. I have hatching season, chores, taxes, too many dogs and work.. Just don't have the energy and time..

Fermented feed I am still doing. I have 10 buckets going at a time.

Hahaha! I just love closet science experiments!

Last year we left a bucket with just a little FF in it in the basement for a full 12 months. I am very good at ignoring gross things. Susan caved and removed it.

I can't do that stuff, yet I have no problem with chickens pooping on me, or sitting in poop.. But when it comes to food and food going bad, I can't. Just no. lol

Hahahaha! Susan might be MY hero! Erick would not do that for me. We live by the your mess you clean it rule. If it is ignored for far too long, well I like to put it where you can't miss it...

I take care of dead animals, so I win lol

She can't touch them. I think that makes it so that I can not touch any rotting food for life. A rabbit died last year under the house. I got it out while she was having a panic attack about it.

Sounds fair. I'm ok with freshly dead. Long dead not so much. I just use a shovel for those things.

This last summer my Burmese x brought me a long since dead rat. No panic attack but I did gag a few times. Totally nasty.
