The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Lynn, you need to keep her away from the rooster till she heals.

This is probably why she is feeling sick like you found her. The crop probably wasn't the issue at all. That is why I asked you to look her over fully last night to see if there were any issues.

If you don't have any Nustock ointment around, I would just use either some raw unprocessed honey in the wound or an antibiotic ointment that doesn't have any pain reliever added.

There are other more natural things that could be used but I'm guessing you don't have any of them in your first aid kit and you need to stop any infection from spreading as soon as possible.

Since it probably isn't sour crop you're dealing with, be sure she has plenty of good, clean water and food available. The animal protein would still be good for her.

I would consider whipping out the ol' Dremel and blunting the cock's spurs. We do it as a prophylaxis in many cases...head off problems before they start.

I agree with Leah's moms ideas. Nustock or raw honey. Or even coconut oil is a great healer (healed my area where I had stictches in 4 days) Plenty of fresh veggies. Garlic is a natural immune booster also. Mix it up with some raw meat and give it to her.

And keep her separated till it scabs over. I have a small dog crate that is small enough to fit in the coop so they can spare the others.

Oh and I would rinse out that wound with soap and water before you add anything to it. And dry well. Even some baby wipes to clean it would work.

Hellbender I only caught the last sentence after hitting reply for my comment "and head off the problem" and thought you were referring to chopping off the roosters head

@ Leahs Mom...I'm waiting for the 'OK' from the Moderators to post the video that will be made of our farm, buildings and stock...including the dogs (a new one..Caucasian Ovcharka) as well as the processing areas. Also will be select cuts of our upcoming clinic, beginning next Friday.

I'll be headed 'South', to the extreme, for vacation but I want to see the video up before the 16th. I hope you and others enjoy it. I have o problem with it being moved around to other threads if the moderators wont object.
