The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

That confirms a suspicion I've had for a long time. My suspicion has been that there probably wouldn't be ANY bird that would choose PROCESSED, COOKED, EXTRUDED, SOYBEAN-FILLED bagged feed if they could eat FRESH.
But they do enjoy french fries, pasta, chicken wings & any other food scraps they can get

eta: If you use lard from a good source it would probably make the feed better for them. Seriously :D
I saved the oil from frying fish for them. I cool it in the fridge & just set it out for them to pick at. They def like it. Almost as much raw eggs :) Weird chickens

Mine love any meat related or butter fat they can get their beaks on too. Most of them will also eat coconut oil with glee.

I once read one of the breeders/showpeople say that he top-dressed his feed for his show birds with lard and it produced very glossy, healthy feathers and skin. I've given lard from time to time ever since. (We have a local butcher shop that butchers only local grown, healthy fed animals so I purchase it from them. I probably wouldn't get lard from the grocery for this.)

Yes I remember that. I do know the girls LOVE the homemade suet I made for them. I really dont give it to them often but maybe I should start lol

Sometimes I wonder.....

I have a source for very inexpensive grass-fed beef and ground beef.
I have a friend at work that hunts venison and gets one for me every year...I just pay for butchering.
Venison friend has also started saving livers from all his hunting for me.

Sometimes I wonder....
If it is even worth trying to grow bugs for me. My meat sources are pretty economical....

I wonder.....

Most feeder insects raised on a big scale will involve some sort of heat and indoor set up, especially considering where you are located. Most will require purchase of their food I would bet you would be ahead of the game w/ what you are already doing.

That looks about 1950's.   Before the no fat craze.    :lau     And people are still worrying about fat.  After all the researchers told them about how good it is for us.
especially coconut oil and olive oil. You can eat straight coconut oil on your toast and it's actually very very good for you as a daily supplement of a super food.

Oh, and my dogs ate a tub of it, they "told me" that it was a great laxative too.............
Does anyone have a meme of Saturday night live's church lady face?
