The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Well, I put some feed in some water last night. Gave a bit of it to the birds this morning - they were very, very confused about what was in their feeder. When I left, one of them was just starting to pick at it. Silly chickens.

Silly chickens! I say that all the time about my girls. There was a new pile of leaves in their run this morning and by lunch time their food/feeder was completely covered in leaves. I had a chuckle and started picking out the leaves. I have put leaf piles in there a few times for them to dig through, but every time they act like they don't know what it is. Finally, somebody is brave enough to give a scratch to the pile, then jump back at the noise, then jump in. Silly chickens.

Here's my favorite thing to say to some of our birds... plus a little back ground info.

We have a pen of rhode island red bantams. Every single night when I go out to start closing up it is almost dark outside. Inside the barn it IS dark so they cannot see their perches.

I say to them "Go to bed you naughty little birds!" You'd think it might get old so I'm not sure why but it gives me just a little chuckle every time.

I took the day off work today to get the last minute things done for the barn housing. We were in the 50's and almost 60 yesterday, then 50's today and it's supposed to drop to the teens tonight.

Got everyone rounded up (which wasn't as easy a task as I thought it would be) and into the barn. It was so strange for the rest of the afternoon. They were very quiet. Exploring, but quite. And when it came time for roosting, the just didn't know what to do. They got a little more "talky" then, but still quiet.

Ended up putting one on a roost and then another tried out; then they both jumped down. It is pretty interesting to see them try to figure out what they should do. I think they were all thinking I was going to open the door and they'd all run home.
