The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Lol on the eggs and your family. I won't even eat or order eggs out for breakfast :D I guess I am an egg snob.

Lol...I don't seem to have much luck with my birdies ....as far as convincing them to do things my way. Except I did block off the hidden nest and was able to get the new layer to use a bucket nest next to her chosen spot. And I noticed that her eggs have harder shells than the other girls. But for most things it is done THEIR way.

lol just like the dirt baths, I put together a designated area and they never bath in it. I did put some DE and ash from our fireplace in font of the coop sine they have been trying to bath there and they actually bathed there!

Bahahahaha. Talkin' to the choir here. Nobody, but nobody in my family can stand to hear me talk about them. After all, we can buy eggs from the grocery store and God Forbid that I actually mention eating one. Not gonna happen. I had to promise, word of honor, that I wouldn't try to sneak one of the processed birds into the family dinner. I kid you not.

You should cook one up just for you and plan on leftovers for other things, chicken sandwiches, chicken pot pie, etc....

Let them smell it but don't let them have any!

That might bring them around.

I plan to do that very thing. I was going to process 8 rescure hens that weren't laying but I had to get them out of the flood line (called a coop with 5" of rain pouring in ) until I could get it fixed. So I sold them. I kind of regret it now because I won't have any more until babies start growing and crowing. I have a killer copycat recipe for KFC pot pie. Soon!!!!!

Oh I made a little dust spa with all the best 'dusts' and they turned up their beaks and rolled in the plain dirt, lol.

Bulldogma's is the Coop Picture of the Week!! Sure wish she could get back on BYC! I miss her on this thread. I know she's wicked busy with her Grit Magazine illustrations, but she was such a happy, helpful presence here.
I wish she was back too. I forget to go to the other place and check in.

Quote: Ideal poultry has meat chicks on sale. You would end up with lots of chicken for chicken pot pie, grilling, roasting, BBQ, and all in about 12 weeks.

Bah! These are the people who make me want to act like a jerk and show them pictures of battery farms and commercial meat operations while they're eating it.
Oh well more for you to hoard!

Nice will have o remember that when we put the garden in this year. Last year I covered our beds with a thick layer of newspaper and heavy mulch on top. We had minimal weeds as well. Thanks for the tip!
there is a video on youtube called backtoeden ,
this guy used only mulch for his garden and never waters. he has about 35 chickens for eggs and to top dress his garden. we did something similar when we lived in Miami, fla and covered our front yard with 2 ft of mulch, free from tree trimmers, and grew beautiful native bushes and did not have to mow. am now going to try this on our veggie garden and have contacted a tree trimmer who is more than happy to drop loads off for us. tired of pulling weeds, and the hens are picky about what weeds they prefer=of course their preference is my kale and other greens.
