I keep my horses crop on my nightstand... beat something if it goes bad. Like a burgler or a stray dog.

You are far more brave than I. I wouldn't go anywhere near a giant husky with a riding crop. Please be careful.

All a riding crop is gonna do is make the dog mad and well.. who knows what ideas it might give a burglar?

One of the problems I can see with a riding crop is, you have to get within arm's length to use it. They're not very long, and a dog could lunge that distance before you could even blink. And a burglar that is stronger than you could grab it and remove it from your grasp in a second. But, we all need to do what's comfortable. Personally, I prefer my Ruger at my bedside.

If a dog is actively attacking your chickens you have every right to shoot and kill that dog. I will not hesitate to do so.

I'm sorry Howlet, but a riding crop to stop a burglar is just asking to get you and your family killed or severely injured. I hope you're kidding about that.

Yup. It's a bit like pulling a gun and not intending to use it - you're forcing the buglar to escalate the situation without escalating it yourself.

I would not hesitate to bring down any vicious animal invading my property. Whether it be a 10 pound sledge on the noggin, or my 9mm, whatever the situation calls for, they would not come out ahead. Nice thing about having soft dirt, easy to bury the remains. Any dog running loose is a danger. If the dog is uncontrolled, it is a reflection of their owners. Better to shoot, shovel, and shut up than deal with low life individuals. Seen enough of those types in my 60 years. "My dog didn't do that....you threatened my dog, she was just protecting herself. Your fault"....the list goes on and on. They can't keep them confined, but it becomes my problem. Up where I live, you can have FOUR dogs, but only TWO chickens. Might have to visit the Town Council, and ask them if they have ever stepped in dog poo, and dragged it into their car or house. Bet none of them would admit to stepping in chicken poo with the same results....

This didn't happen with chickens but in my previous living arrangement I went for a walk one time around the neighborhood with my son and our dog (100 lb Saint Bernard mix). When we were almost home one of the neighbors two little dogs came running out of there yard at us. These two dogs were never on a leash when outside. My dog was leashed and behaved appropriately....I didn't. The offending "mutt" received a swift boot that sent it flying. Luckily the neighbor came running from around the front of the house and grabbed the dog before it made another bad decision or the "mutt" was gonna get wacked with the stick I was carrying for that exact purpose. I didn't get any apologies from them. Although apparently they got the message of what would happen to there mutt because after the incident I never saw there dogs outside again until they fenced in there yard.
