The new Chevrolet VOLT

They didn't need to take bail out money. If you recollect, they were in terrible shape about 1 year before the other 2 took their bailouts. Ford got a huge loan from a private lender before the Wall street debacle. GM and Chrysler will still limping along at that time. If Ford had not gotten the private loan before the banks wouldn't loan anymore than they would have taken a bailout, just like the other two. GM and Chrysler tried to hold on longer, by the time they finally tried to get loans they were unable to. GM has paid most of their money back. The only Ford I would ever buy is a truck.
Chevy for me. The bailout saved a lot of jobs.

If I was interested in a Volt, I would wait a few years. The technology will start jumping by big leaps now. 5 years from now they will be twice as efficient or even more than they are now. If not the Volt it will be something else.

GE is investing heavily in those power stations. They feel they are the future and they want to have the jump on them. I wonder if they're made in China.

I agree.

The geek in me loves the Volt but the pragmatist says "wait and see".

I do need to see some data on the mileage per KW however. That electricity is generated somewhere.

I heard a blurb on NPR from some group that says if electric cars become really popular they will put a strain on the power grid. I wonder if they really pull that much juice.

Quick math (wearing my technician, not engineer's hat)

The car has a 150 hp electric motor which would require 115KW(a lot) to achieve and a 39 mile range on batteries.
Assuming a 1 hour drive averaging 39MPH would need 40HP depending on passengers and terrain.
That works out to 30KW of power required.
30KW in CT would cost $6.

There are a LOT of assumptions here and I can be WAY OFF but that's not all that bad.

Now build me a Silverado 2500 Quad Cab Volt and I'll be interested.

If they were charged at night it would be ok. I'm wondering about these quickchargers though and how many KW it takes to fill up the tank.
