The new coop is a comin' along!

Baleigh and I decided to make a coop with plenty of room for our new flock and expand if we want. It has been a project but a lot of fun. Made lots of headway today. At a bit after 6am, my friend and I jumped on the coop with both feet. It was framed to roof rafter stage when we started and we made it to underlayment, moisture barrier, and ready to do the roof metal phase as the deck is already on. It seems like it took forever to make it to this point as every time I could work on it, we had rain. Thank God for that, we can always use it. By the way it is 12' x 11'. I had the roof so made it to fit!

We tease about it being the "Chicken Palace"!!!!

Wow that's a lot of coop! Beautiful construction. Looks a bit bigger than my first apartment. Lucky chickens!

We just started work on a much smaller coop today for our 5 new chicks. We're working with salvaged doors and shutters. And once it was framed and solid enough to stand up, I realized it sort of looks like an old fashioned outhouse. You are certainly not going to have that problem!

Thanks for the good comments. I will add a run when we get it finished at least on the front and it's is painted. Otherwise it will be in the way...plan is 27' by 11'. I likely will add a tractor so they can see more of the area and maybe not make the run completely bald...open to thoughts and suggestions...

And the saga continues....got a lot done today. Hope to get the metal roof on and the windows and door in tomorrow. Will finish the gable siding and get started on the priming/painting as well. I have some helpers tomorrow so it should go well....

Might be an idea to paint before putting in the windows and any trim that you might put up. It makes it seem like slower going, but it's so much faster to paint when you don't have to be careful around different colored parts. Also paint the different colored stuff before installing it. The coop looks good, and most importantly, well built.

We planned on doing the paint that way as it does work well. We have part of the trim on and all the other stuff on the outside pretty much done. It has rained every day and that sure speeds things up! We did the interior wiring and also installed the chicken door. I am really pleased with this door. Works great on it's photocell. Open and close with the sun!

The peeps are getting big now (5 weeks) so I really need to get done with all of this but it always seems to take a lot longer than anticipated. Oh well! Onward through the fog...

With a photocell activated door, don't put roosts outside the coop, unless you want to collect the chickens from there after sundown. (In case you put up a run and are thinking of things to put in there.)
