The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread

From what I have read the dark brown is coated on right before it is expelled from the hen...so it is last thing that is " painted" on right before it pops out...by sanding that off some it gives it more air and humidity. Yeah curve ball because more impurities can get in? But it seems to help...has anyone noticed maran hens scratch their eggs up more than other hens if you don't take them away right away? Also a broody maran...will scratch them up also kinda like she is doing the same thing...maybe they know something! Lol if an egg comes in all scratched up I can usually hatch it...I won't have to sand it either...lol

Yes, I shipped some in from Chooks and tried her method on half of them I think the air cells were blotto on those, since the other eggs in the shipment that I could see into were a mess.
My broodies are great, but the way the PO has treated all the boxes this year I havent bothered giving them shipped eggs.

Ok... What is the sanding method? I tried to search for it but... ???

Going from pointy to oval end of the egg lightly sand off the brown color so that you make little stripes like a watermelon with stripes. Then brush the " dust" off.(I use a little brush used for horses faces.)You can get one at a tack store. This method will increase your hatch rate because they can transfer water and air more efficiently while incubating. Chookschick has a nice tutorial here on byc if you look it up...she is a maran hatching guru!
