I don't know much about all Marans eggs but I have gotten two batches from a reputable and known breeder with most of the eggs looking like this-scratched I mean. My first batch 12 out of 14 developed only 5 hatched but I did something wrong 6 pipped their air cells but then never pipped the shells. Had I known when I should have intervened they would have hatched. I believe I lost them due to wrong positioning because of shipping. It was not the scratches, I think this just happens with some of the darker eggs. I personally wouldn't be worried. Any feathers or large bits just pull off.

I am going to post my question here so it isn't offensive to the seller on the other thread where I bought these eggs. (But I have purchased eggs on this thread recently too so please bare with me.) I purchased these BBS Copper Marans eggs and they arrived with no breaks and packaged with great care HOWEVER this is what they looked like inside the packaging:

Should I be upset? Won't all these deep scratches (which are all over the entire egg) and poo/dirt seriously affect my hatch? I expect a little poo or dirt on a couple but over half of the 3 dozen were pretty dirty and were scratched up. I just need clarification before I decide whether or not to mention this to the seller. This is my fifth batch of shipped eggs so I'm not super experienced but this is a first for me. I wouldn't set my own eggs in this condition but I also don't want to offend if this is considered acceptable.

Pretty much every marans eggs I have ever recieved were scratched like that also is my expieriance it doesn't affect the hatching ability.

Thank you both very much! I didn't want to jump the gun and assume anything or offend. I just didn't know and figured I should ask before getting upset. My other eggs all came clean and smooth but they weren't dark either. I am so glad I asked! :)

that's the thing about marans eggs. I sell a lot of eating eggs, and you can scratch the color off with a simple towel. I do watch for porous eggs before setting. I have found, for myself, that I get a poor hatch out of really, really porous eggs.

Most of that will wipe of with a dry cloth, gotta teach those girls to wipe their feet. The scratches are unfortunately part of most dark eggs. Too bad really, they are so pretty when you can get to them before all the traffic

I agree with the others. My Marans nest boxes are clean and I collect eggs throughout the day but sometime they get dirty from their feet or even feathers if its been raining out. As far as the scratches that's just what happens with dark eggs. As soon as the egg hits the straw or shavings in the nest box, the "paint" scratches off because its not completely dry yet. Look like nice eggs :)

I raise black copper marans---so here is my opionion.

I wash all eggs from other farms. ALWAYS. I use a dilute bleach dip, others recommend oxine.

If you want a chance at a good hatch you will want to remove lots of the marans coating with a nail file until it looks like a brown watermelon. CHookschick posted the instructions somewhere. LEt me know if you can't find it.

So the scratches are immaterial-- that is they are supperficial. The brown coating is layered on last and is not part of the calcium layer, so it it prone to scartching

Hope you have an awesome hatch!!

My girls fight over one box in particular. They can really scracth the eggs up, but like everyone said, these are Marans eggs. If you wiped them off enough, they'd be white under all that brown. The poop? I've see so much worse, but when I get it I try to carefull wipe it of when I get them. If I had my other laptop running I could show you lots of nasty eggs I have gotten from all over, but I even got hatches from some of them. My broodies don't always keep the eggs perfect. I just had 2 broodies hatch out 8 chicks and man, I saw broody poop in the box they were in and I was paniced that the eggs would get nasty. Chicks were clean though. LOL
