I don't know much about all Marans eggs but I have gotten two batches from a reputable and known breeder with most of the eggs looking like this-scratched I mean. My first batch 12 out of 14 developed only 5 hatched but I did something wrong 6 pipped their air cells but then never pipped the shells. Had I known when I should have intervened they would have hatched. I believe I lost them due to wrong positioning because of shipping. It was not the scratches, I think this just happens with some of the darker eggs. I personally wouldn't be worried. Any feathers or large bits just pull off.
I am going to post my question here so it isn't offensive to the seller on the other thread where I bought these eggs. (But I have purchased eggs on this thread recently too so please bare with me.) I purchased these BBS Copper Marans eggs and they arrived with no breaks and packaged with great care HOWEVER this is what they looked like inside the packaging:

Should I be upset? Won't all these deep scratches (which are all over the entire egg) and poo/dirt seriously affect my hatch? I expect a little poo or dirt on a couple but over half of the 3 dozen were pretty dirty and were scratched up. I just need clarification before I decide whether or not to mention this to the seller. This is my fifth batch of shipped eggs so I'm not super experienced but this is a first for me. I wouldn't set my own eggs in this condition but I also don't want to offend if this is considered acceptable.

I agree with the others. My Marans nest boxes are clean and I collect eggs throughout the day but sometime they get dirty from their feet or even feathers if its been raining out. As far as the scratches that's just what happens with dark eggs. As soon as the egg hits the straw or shavings in the nest box, the "paint" scratches off because its not completely dry yet. Look like nice eggsI am going to post my question here so it isn't offensive to the seller on the other thread where I bought these eggs. My girls fight over one box in particular. They can really scracth the eggs up, but like everyone said, these are Marans eggs. If you wiped them off enough, they'd be white under all that brown. The poop? I've see so much worse, but when I get it I try to carefull wipe it of when I get them. If I had my other laptop running I could show you lots of nasty eggs I have gotten from all over, but I even got hatches from some of them. My broodies don't always keep the eggs perfect. I just had 2 broodies hatch out 8 chicks and man, I saw broody poop in the box they were in and I was paniced that the eggs would get nasty. Chicks were clean though. LOL
