The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread

I usually have okay hatches. I dry incubate. I never put water in until day 18. I try to keep the humditiy at 40% but it usually gets up to 45%. If i could figure out how to get it lower I would like to get it to 35%, but so far havent had any problems. I just lay my eggs in the incubator and turn the 2 times a day. Th worst hatch rate I have had has been 17% (they were shipped eggs). If I were to put them in eggs cartons would this make my hatch rate increase(assuming that the eggs are good)? Or just I just stick to my usual methods?

i think they're drowning. I keep my humidity at 20-35 first 18 and bump it up to 60-65 for lockdown. Everyone has a different opinion about it but in my experience I have had dramatically better hatches with dry hatch method.

To all the new folks who are hatching. Have you "practiced" with local eggs to calibrate your bator, and get your system down? Not trying to discourage you from buying eggs. Just think that it is a waste of money and very discouraging to buy eggs when you dont really know what you are doing yet (that is not ment to be rude, we have all been new at this, learn the easy way first) I am no expert, I still cant get the BCMs to hatch and have seriously considered shipping chicks. I have spent more than enough on them to have had a good sized flock by now. I have pretty good luck with other chickens, turkeys and ducks. No luck with Muscovy yet after 2 tries. They may be to complicated for me.

Yes, feel free to use it.  I don't plan to.

Lol dak, you are too much.
I really love those Brahmas but goodness knows, I dont need another breed.

Thanks to all of you guys for the knowledge and encouragement. :) I am new to incubating (new again I should say... We did it on our farm growing up but that has been longer than I care to admit!.) and I am grateful for all of you being willing to share what you have learned. :) Even if this isn't supposed to be a full on chat thread! :D

This is my favorite thread.

I'll add my humidity experience as well. With water in my trays, I was drowning my own FBCM.

40% humidity in my house, NO water until LD. Excellent hatches from my birds now and 50% hatches from shipped eggs.

*scratches head* Is there any way to lower humidity without getting a dehumidifier? My hygrometer was reading 30% last night but due to massive rain storms, its at 50% with no water in the incubator! I don't have extra money to get a dehumidifier right now, since we have a 18 day trip to the UK coming up LOL

I don't think a "temporary" hike will hurt (chickens don't carry humidifiers either) but you will want to allow it to go back down again. You can try putting dry rice in the incubator to absorb some moisture too.
