The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread

Holy
well, I got a trap for it/them, but so far they've just taken the bait thru the wire and tripped the trap without getting caught...  any thoughts or suggestions?

I've got some nice stinky eggs that they seem to love, but all they did was crack the eggs and pull them thru the wire.

and possums.
I attached sheet metal to mine and I've also used 1/4X1/4 wire wrapped around the entire cage except the part they go into. Stopped anything from reaching through and stealing bait.

Crap! Never thought about that... I figure, trap, bait, caught, disposable criter. Guess not. great well at least I'm forwarned, wonder what we will do.I think there is hardware cloth left over from the pen deb built that the evil daredevil broke into and killed my pretty boy. He came back last night dug a hole trying yo get in but he failed that time...hey will a opossum reach threw like that? Or just coons?

DeannaA Let me know what shape they're in.

Darn multi button didn't work!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrr

I've had horrible hatches mostly, since my husband died 3 years ago. I think it and myself are just mental!  But I also have an OLD Sportsman, and although they develop, they don't hatch. I have 3 or 4 homemade bators buried somewhere and I swear they always kicked booty when it can to hatching. And I used to love to put things together, then ended up with a husband that always said "I'll do it, that's what husbands are for!" So now, I can't remember how to do much of anything I did before I met him, but I can build a bator. The last one, he cut hardware cloth for me, just because, but I wired it and cut and put it together. That one was a styro bator and it worked great. I didn't use a fan, but to tell the truth, I'm kind of partial to still air. I don't go out and fan broodies, so I figure it's good. One particularly bad hatch, my youngest daughter was here and she asked why I didn't just use one of the home made bators, because I always had things hatching in there. This year I set hundreds of eggs. To get chicks though, I used broodies. Nothing wanted to hatch otherwise.
i remember back a couple years ago maybe you were trying for some fluffies to hatch and you an aweful time of it I felt so bad. That was before I had any of course. Were you using a sportsman then?! Maybe I have a common denominator here with my hatches this year past and my old dry as crap sportsman got way less hatching here everything developed hardly any hatches. But I don't hatch in the sportsman

You poor thing! I'm sitting here trying to figure out if we have an incubator I can send you! I'm SO sorry about the dead chicks. I have had a mother do that, but for me it is rare...with so many chickens we have something like 8 to 10 broodies at one time! overall I have very good luck with them. I even give all my "special" eggs to them. Thank you. You are sweet. I am telling myself it is just a minor setback. My husband and I are going to try to rig something up to hatch my quail eggs. I have a good many broodies right now but they all have eggs under them. Most just have mixed barnyard eggs. This is my first time raising my own chicks. I figured letting them hatch their own mixed eggs would be good experience. I did have a cochin bantam hen hatch out 14 little bantam mixes so cute. She is being a great mom. I messed up this time. I let them start sitting at different times, they keep swapping nests, I don't remember when they started sitting, and the other hens keep trying to lay in the nest boxes they are sitting in even though there are a lot of other boxes. Sigh. Oh well. I will do it differently next time for sure. I am going to try to get up some pics of our new babies. I hope to buy an incubator soon and I am going to try to make one. I also separate the broody mothers from everyone...I don't let them pile up like they like to do, since I have had them stomp chicks or eggs trying to keep eggs or get them from another hen.

for me they just seem to sit tight better in a private dark little cave of kennel or cage or something...i keep one end open so they can see...I also go in and take her off the nest every day or so...so she can flap around and go to the bathroom...food and water is within reach I also use practice eggs to see if she is sitting for real or playing house, but doesn't really care about it that much... I have had those and was thankful the eggs weren't ones i wanted or needed...since they are fake! I have three fake ones i use.

Sportsman and I don't remember if I used one of the LGs to hatch, but I think I used the Sportsman because I figured that was their best chance. I've hatch a lot of chicks in that thing, but then things got weird and now I can get quail, but hard time with chickens. I fail completely at guineas, turkeys and guess and that kills me because I'd like to hatch Emus.

for the emu.. modify a LG.. (pics of mine is in my emu page.. link in my signature)
Yeah except I live in town and I know it will kill me to sell it, so I'm trying to wait. Then again......Yeah I was thinking LG or one of the homemades for it.That's so long to wait for an egg to hatch. At least a smaller bator I could stick somewhere so I don't smash my face on it every day waiting for it to hatch.
