The Next Depression?

Yes, The QA on biodiesel is in its infancy, I had a tallow factory (read KNACKER) making the stuff, Bio has 5-7 times more lubricity than diesel, thats a good thing, but it is a great solvent, and it will clean all the existing goo outta a fuel system so first couple of tankfulls you have to change all the filters. You will get a serious deration of horsepower. BUT your exhaust will smell good. Chinese food or Mc Donalds........YOU WILL NEVER SMELL Donuts tho......seeems that the donuts absorb the oil so there is no waste oil at donut land.
(i was sorry to hear that) ANYway. just cause you can use bio or SVO it takes some modifications but it will work. Cept it isnt efficient for the guy that runs 1000 gallons of offroad and 1000 gallons of on road diesel per month. Customers thot we were great for going ALTernative but its not all that great.

My home, office, business is all solar, my water is pumped by a windmill.... and Permaculture is the format that we are building our ranch after.

Glad to hear a good, non biased, opinions on biofuel. I get so turned off by the "bio
is gonna save the world crowd". I get equally angry with the "lets pump all the
oil we can out the ground crowd". Politics are getting in the way of real progress.
Like Rosalind said hopefully the cost of oil will drive true progress.

Hope to post more later when I have time...

I tried to find it but the link is dead. Quadcam will pop in later hopefully.

Here is a thread where it was originally discussed:

I'm planting more this year than in the past and hopefully going to can more to preserve as well. Been a while since I've canned tomatoes but I will this year.

My husband makes his own bio-diesel from used frying oil that places give him free just to be rid of it. He uses it 100% in his tractor during warm weather and hasn't had any problems, his dad though is too nervous even to try it as a blend and even the tractor dealer/company reps didn't really know how their tractors would "survive" the stuff.

What happened to your batch that screwed up your equipment? I know a couple times he's had to reprocess a batch but I don't know the particulars.

I agree wiith you about getting angree with people thinking that bio will save the world but we do need to look into better alternatives. Also what is going on is now gas stations are watering down the gas which is bad. My moms car was sputtering and stalling when she picked up cheap watered down gas. the clutch would slip. But when she went to the more exspensive places her car was fine.

PC, I am a member on too many forums LOL, it's hard to keep up. Choppers, Chickens, Gardens, Hot Rods, Sustainable living.

People don't need to try and change the world, you can try and tell them things have to change and explain how to go about it but the majority are pretty greedy and self absorbed and it'll take something dramatic to rattle them, maybe the gas prices will get people attention. For me it's about looking out for my family. i'm going to start planting an orchard soon, Bananas, apples, berries, oranges, lemon, lime, grapes, figs, olives, pineapple etc etc..we can grow such a great variety here.

I'm just really trying to reduce the amount we spend on food each month. If I can grow it or raise it at home I'll do it. If I can show someone else the benefits and they take that advice and use it for thier family, great, if not well I dont feel sorry for them paying $15.00 for 4 skinless chicken breast in the store..it's not that much yet but it wont be long.

I told my family this morning, I just can't imagine what the Depression must've been like. I wish my parents were still alive, so I could ask them in more detail, if they remembered. I mean, this is really horrible. I have never seen it like this. I have my own business and we are really busy for this time of year.....busy networking, marketing, and finding ways to cut costs...but have had no actual work, to speak of, for months, and our clients are not spending money at all even on things that we would normally do for them. We talked about this in another thread not too long ago. Everything has it's advantages though as it may be a good time to buy a car, get some painting and other maintenance work done around the house, that type of thing. A garden is a good idea, if you can keep the poultry, deer, rabbits, and all the other critters out of it! I'm at least thankful that two of our three children recently got good summer jobs, so at least they can contribute towards their own gas and expenses! Teenage labor is cheaper....

I just read an article this week-end about inventions (& have been bought and stored) that extend gas mileage.
It said in the seventy's gas crisis Shell sent a car around that said the side of this car (It was not a "green" car) (I can't remember what it was) got 379 miles per gallon on the side of it....
It also went on to say that the new bill congress passed that takes effect in 2010 is going to have a drastic change in mpg...no more hiding tech. that's why the oil companies were selling stock, and energy companies were too. Now this was just something I was reading...not done any research on it...but did find it interesting.

Also, the depression is coming, the recession has been here.
Just my thoughts.
