Good morning, Bob, happy Father's day!

Totally off topic, but the boys and I had fun yesterday putting up dry pintos. I could only find a 10 lb bag, but we don’t eat them frequently enough to get through that much in a timely manner. So we sealed by the pound in Mylar with O2 absorbers and they were fascinated with how that worked.

Does that keep them longer? I thought dried pintos would keep forever?

You can keep them longer in a no oxygen environment. 2 or 3 years if in their original bag in your pantry. 15 to 25 years if stored in cool temps without oxygen, depending on your source for information. Hubs and I are the only ones who like beans other than refried so I store my other beans in Mylar bags also. I have one pound left from a 25 lb bag of navy beans we got 6 years ago.

I have sugar stored that way because we don’t use a lot of it, and it keeps bugs out; I recently added flour to my stores also since it’s something difficult to get in my area from time to time after Covid hit. I grew up an hours drive from town with no neighbors or had to deal with earthquakes so being at least a little bit prepared has always been a habit.

Good info to know! I have dried pinto beans I've never opened. Got it free from the school during the pandemic but didn't know how long they'd last.

I couldn't imagine living that far from town but, its better to be prepared than not at all.
