Hhhhm, plans for the weekend .. melt, cold shower, melt, repeat! Predicted maximum today [Saturday] is 97F and tomorrow 102F with overnight temps predicted to not drop below 80.5F.

New plan, find a dark corner with air conditioning, curl up and not come out until it is winter!

I have been doing some research in an attempt to tick off some of the bigger boxes which are concerning me regarding the move and happy to report that I have found a pet transport who will pick up the cats and chickens from here, take them to the airport and not only greet them at Townsville Airport but also deliver them to Forrest Beach [1.5 hours up the road] and all for a fee which I thought was pretty reasonable and definitely doable. They organise everything including the flight. Also, they have transported pet chickens before. The crates for the cats are just hired but as they have to be modified, we get to keep the chicken crates [included in the price]. Two chickens in one crate and three in the other. So, those little fat chickens that I joke fly like bricks will be flying over 1,000kms! lol Also, they will have the pet bay on the plane to themselves with no room for anyone else's pets. They appear to be a well liked and trusted service provider and if the phone call and subsequent quote delivery are anything to go by, someone I feel comfortable dealing with. There was a moment of concern when the quote stated "All pets must be microchipped" and I sent off a quick reply enquiring if that included the chickens and was relieved to find out it did not [cats are already chipped]. Can't see the chickens being impressed by a visit to the Vet and insertion of a microchip; the trip itself is probably going to be enough fun for them

Plus a quick phone call to the Department of Agriculture to confirm that there was no issue moving them, which I did not think there would be, being that it is the same state [Queensland] .. so that box is now ticked! One box at a time

Hubby’s pre-employment medical sounds like it went OK and as the Doc mentioned “you are doing a desk job, right?” .. so now we wait and hope for a phone call early next week

Teila, it sounds like all good news so far!

That must be a relief to have the cats and chickens accounted for in the moving scheme. The next time someone wants to know if chickens can fly, you'll be able to tell them about your flying birds, lol. Sounds like a great way to get them to your new place. And the crates could come in handy in the future.

Oh boy, that waiting for news can sure make the time drag. But we're all pulling for you guys and I'm thinking that company wouldn't go to the expense and time on just anyone.

Just keep ticking those boxes off!

Great to hear that you've got your animals all organised, Teila. And fingers crossed that you'll hear some good news soon. I saw that most of Auzzie was experiencing a heat wave. Poor you! And your poor chickens too.

I've been busy as it was our son's birthday today. He's had a ball and was as high as a kite, but he seems to have calmed down now. He wanted a rainbow Dora cake so he's had quite enough colouring!

Our first lot of baby finches will be taking off soon. Some did a bit of test flying when we got them out today but then they were happy to have a cuddle and a pat. My niece and nephew loved being able to hold baby finches. But I noticed a few flies around our younger lot of finches nestbox. So I investigated (once the kids had gone to play) and found one dead - I suspect it got squashed. One has disappeared (if the parents tossed it the button quail would've taken care of it, and not in a loving way) but the other 3 look healthy. It's their first time having babies and I'm kind of glad as that will give us 7 finch babies in total, which is quite a lot when you have a daughter who wants to keep them all - they are very endearing little things so I can't blame her!

Our Bourke babies look enormous now - Pinkie spent a lot of time out of the box today so they must be getting old enough to not need her heat so much. I'll try and get a photo - they were fast asleep when I went out with my camera. So at least I can check on them a bit more and get them used to my face before I steal them in a week to hand rear the rest of the way.

Jag yes, we need to see more pictures - they are so stinkin' adorable. How long does it take for them to be full grown?
Like I need an excuse to take more photos! The older finches are 3 weeks old tomorrow and in another week they should be venturing out of their nestbox. Hopefully they will stay pretty tame. They are considered adult at 3 months old. The bourkes will need feeding until they are independent at 8-10 weeks old. They get their adult plumage at 4-6 months. I suspect my DD is planning on keeping both bourke babies!

I have Java finches laying eggs in the nestbox right next to the younger finches which will make it difficult to handle the younger ones as it's 3 nestboxes in one, all connected, if you get my drift. I've had no luck with my Javas so far. They are supposed to be amazing hand reared pets. It's very common in Japan to have a hand reared Java as a pet. I've found some cute videos on YouTube of hand reared ones. Mine are very highly strung and haven't even laid fertile eggs so we shall see.

Are the Java finches also known as Java Temple Birds? We had one when I was young, she ? was a very cheerful bird, hopping from perch to perch which entailed flying thru her swing first. The store only had one, and didn't know that she really needed company. But, we had her for 7 years, even without knowing the proper care. We did love her despite her being terrified if we got too close. My dad used to cut her nails but, she would get hysterical - and cling to the cage wire which gave him the opportunity to clip whatever nails stuck out
I was so afraid she'd have a stroke, I hid in my room when he planned to do her nails. It was scary enough giving her fresh water & food and cleaning the bottom of the cage.

She had a small bell hanging by the side of her cage and she would put her head in the bell and sleep (I imagine). Sometimes she would just ring the bell. She also sang, so maybe that meant she was a boy.

Yes, that'll be them. They are pretty birds even though they aren't colourful. That's so funny about the bell! That must've looked so cute!

We got ours from a friend that was moving house and couldn't take them. There were 10 but I'm down to 5 now, 2 boys and 3 girls. They are very hard to sex and unless it's breeding season I don't know who is who. The boys do a funny hopping dance as they sing their song, though one of our males just does his dance - I don't think he wants the other male to notice what he's doing! I'd like to hand raise a few babies and rehome the more highly strung adults. Despite being inside for quite some time they never tamed down in the least. I really like them - I just wish they wouldn't freak out everytime I go into the aviary.
